Finding faith in the past's successes (Lieberman Compares Self To Truman)
Finding faith in the past's successes

Lieberman claims he will 'give them hell too'

Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman stepped out on the white wooden porch of a Manchester home yesterday and looked out at the crowd of about 75 gathered on the blacktop below, kids reined in and momentarily quieted, to hear him speak.

"Why is it that I feel like Harry Truman on the back of a train?" he said.

Then, trying on the line, Lieberman added: "I'm going to give them hell too."

If the Truman reference was improvised, it was also, perhaps, fortuitous in a campaign that has been criticized for not being aggressive enough. Truman, after all, took his "give them hell" line across America to narrowly defeat then-favorite governor Thomas Dewey in 1948.

1. "Why is it that I feel like Harry Truman on the back of a train?"
Because you are suffering delusions of granduer, Joe.

Howard Dean is more like Truman than any of the other candidates, including you Joe. Dean has courage, innovative thinking, sound judgment, and is proud to be a Democrat. You Joe, come across as being afraid of being a Democrat.

But I think that the best Truman-like quality that Dean has and one that we will need desperately in our nominee and future President is the ability to calm a frightened and worried people and remain calm in the storms that we are sure to endure in the near future. Dean did that in Vermont and that quality is a combination of innate ability, education, vision, and experience in dealing with crisis. Dean dealt with more crisis in his governorship than you, Joe, have in your entire political life.

2. Uh-huh... Sure.
I can see the debates now.

Bush: I sent in troops to get rid of a madman in Iraq.
Lieberman: I supported President Bush's decision to do so.
Bush: I feel that religion should play a vital role in addressing the concerns of those in need, and government should encourage that.
Lieberman: I couldn't agree more.
Bush: I have a huge upright roulette wheel in my bedroom at the White House that I spin every morning, and whatever subject comes up the winner is what I talk about that day.
Lieberman: This is a wonderful system that I wholeheartedly endorse and will use as well if elected president.

Way to give 'em hell, Joseph. Be sure to turn off the lights (or have someone turn of the lights for you if it's Saturday) on the way out.

4. I have tried to refrain...
from being too critical of any of the Democratic candidates. Lieberman makes it impossible.

6. Look at it this way
I've never been a Lieberman fan, something which I'll readily admit.

I don't mind candidates bashing each other. That's part of the whole primary game, but what Lieberman is doing is bashing the base of the party...that mean US, those of us out here who identify ourselves as part of the liberal base.

That's a big no-no and changes everything. I haven't been actively working to make sure any candidate loses, but now that I am under attack philosophically by one of them, well, that makes this a different game now.

11. Exactly!
Lieberman is doing the work normally reserved for the opposition. It's natural for each candidate to promote his own strengths, and occasionally there will be differences of opinion, but Holy Joe stands alone in tearing down ALL of the other Democratic candidates.

I think that he believes he should be a Democratic, but his heart belongs to the Republicans. I wish he'd drop out, and make room for the candidates who want to make a difference in the way this country is going.

10. Here's some other Truman quotes for Lieberman to use
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 09:47 AM by khephra
"Given a choice between a Republican and a Republican, the voters will always choose the Republican."

"I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."

12. Okay Joe, how about Universal Health Care then?
That was one of the things Truman pushed for.

But I guess that would run afoul of the Insurance industry so we can;t give 'em that much hell, eh?

13. When any candidate has to invoke the name

and compare themselves to a former leader then you know that they are in trouble.

If Joe Leiberman can't do better than that and has to revert to gimmicks to tie himself into the past then he has already lost.

To think that the average American voter would be taken in by such cheap *parlor-tricks like this is.......:eyes:

....never mind.

15. didn't Harry support and do some of those "left" things
Holy Joe lashed out about re "left-wing democrats"?

it's bad enough he sits as a Board member of the Nixon Center ...
that's insulting to me ...

http://www.nixoncenter.org/boardac.htm

but, when he "lashes" out at the heart and soul of my party and the
policies which have helped the people the most in our modern history ... he crosses the line

I can never vote for Joe Lieberman.

He's done as much damage to our Party as Bu$h*. I wish he'd just go away. He's doing his best to destroy what has made me a Democrat all my life.

Lieberman lashes left-wing Democrats
Sunday, August 10, 2003 Posted: 6:56 PM EDT (2256 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman attacked the left wing of his
party Sunday, saying Democrats "don't deserve to run the country" if
they move left and embrace "the failed solutions of the past."

16. Sen. Harry Truman Led the Senate Investigations of War Profiteering
during WWII.

Sen. Joe Lieberman is all tied up himself with Enron (and Citigroup) that bilked their employees, consumers, and investors-- and destroyed the California economy.

Joe, we knew Harry Truman, and you ain't no Harry Truman.
