Eleven injured in Algiers blast

Algiers - Algerian officials said on Tuesday it was unclear what caused the explosion at a power plant in the capital that injured 11 people.

An investigation was under way into the explosion on Monday, a day after oil-rich Algeria said its forces killed the leader of the main Islamic militant group with ties to al-Qaeda.

"The origin of the blast has not yet been determined," state electricity group Sonelgaz said in a statement.

Some national newspapers said it bore the hallmarks of a car bomb, not seen in Algiers since the late 1990s. Anti-terrorist officials were at the scene.

Hours after a powerful blast rocked a power plant near the Algerian capital, newspapers in the north African country speculated that the explosion was caused by an attack by extremists, while officials stuck to their line that it was accidental.

At least 11 people were injured when an explosion rocked Hamma power station, just outside the Mediterranean coastal capital, Algiers, at around 9pm GMT on Monday.

The thick cloud of smoke that filled the sky above the power station and was visible from Algiers set residents of the capital talking about "a bomb attack".
