San Francisco voters get chance to express views on Iraq

San Francisco voters will have more than one chance to express their views on the U.S.-led war in Iraq this presidential election year after four local officials submitted a ballot measure Tuesday calling on the federal government to end the conflict.
The toughly worded statement, which will appear with candidates for federal, state and municipal offices on the city's November ballot, argues that the country's military involvement in Iraq has not only cost more than 850 American lives, but bled the nation of billions of dollars that could have been spent domestically.
"George W. Bush disgracefully lied to the American people to make the case for Iraq," it begins. "His message was one of deceit and fear mongering."
Although several local governments went on record last year opposing the U.S. invasion of Iraq, San Francisco is the first to submit such a referendum for the electorate's consideration, according to Chris Daly, the San Francisco supervisor who drafted the measure.
