Afghan president pleads for NATO help
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 10:22 AM by dArKeR
AP AND AFP , ISTANBUL

Afghan President Hamid Karzai appealed yesterday for NATO to speed up a planned expansion of its peacekeeping force in his country to protect against terrorists, private armies and narcotics gangs before September's key elections.

"Please hurry," Karzai urged a NATO summit.

"Come sooner than September and provide the Afghan men and women with a chance to vote freely without fear, without coercion," he said.

On Monday, the alliance decided to expand its peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan from 6,500 to 10,000 over the election period, although officials clarified yesterday that about 1,300 of those troops will be held in reserve outside the country for emergency use.

5. No, that is not the problem
They were willing to help in Afganistan, but the problem is that this administration went into Iraq against their objections, why should they listen to us now?

Afganistan was our war, and 95% of the world was behind it until bush went to Iraq. Now both countries are screwed up, and this country is asking Nato to bail them out. The arragonce of this administration has caused the situation we are in today...

2. Maybe they should have put stability above the pipeline.
What do you say to that Unocal executive Karzai? Well, I am sure the construction around the pipeline is VERY secure, to hell with the people.

7. Gee Hamid, we'd sure like to help you . . .
But Lil George spent all of the Treasury and most of our military on Iraq. Nothing left for you. Shame, really. You're such a snappy dresser. Check back in a year or two, we'll see what we have then. Just leave your number with the girl at the front desk, and we'll call you if anything comes up.
