Report: Janklow avoided tickets 16 times
Report: Janklow avoided tickets 16 times

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Former Rep. Bill Janklow, who resigned from Congress after being convicted in a highway death, was stopped 16 times by state troopers during his last term as governor but was never ticketed, according to a South Dakota Highway Patrol report.

Troopers felt they should not ticket Janklow out of respect for his authority and, in some cases, fear of retribution, said the report, written by the patrol superintendent, Col. Dan Mosteller, for Gov. Mike Rounds.

Mosteller said he never issued orders to go easy on Janklow. The two previous heads of the Highway Patrol, state Sen. Gene Abdallah and state Public Safety Director Tom Dravland, said they also did not order troopers not to stop Janklow.

Janklow was attorney general from 1975 to 1979, governor from 1979 to 1987 and re-elected governor in 1994. He was elected to Congress in November 2002 but resigned in January after being convicted of second-degree manslaughter, speeding, running a stop sign and reckless driving. He was speeding on a rural road when he ran a stop sign and struck a motorcyclist.

1. This is too disgusting for words
Maybe if once he had to pay the consequences for his illegal actions, then the victim he killed might still be alive today.

2. Are those troopers' names on the record?
If so, are they not worried about the expansion of the civil case that will surely, and correctly, be brought against Janklow?

8. State, county and local Officers take it up the *** when they
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 02:35 PM by gatlingforme
are sworn in as officers for any one entity. From the chief of police to the sheriff, to the AG, These officers do not only swear to serve the public, but whomever is politically connected as well... When an officer is let go the saying is " give up your job or your career, you choose. alot of these chiefs, sheriffs, S/A's and so on, are up in the position due to kiss ass or favors. These are the exceptions though. 85% of chiefs are on the up and up and truely believe in their officers as well they should. (added) -- I know some that would sell there mother for a favor.

24. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes either. It must be incredibly...
...distressing to go from picking up pieces of dead kids on the freeway after a drunk driving accident to dealing with an "untouchable" politician.

6. Hey folks! It happens ALL the time!
I've lived in 4 different states ....north, sout east and west. This kind of thing happens EVERYWHERE! I'm not agreeing with it, but in every situation: legal troubles, getting promoted, losing your job, getting a raise.....it's all who you know and who you are, and nothing more. Sometimes the results are VERY BAD as in the motorcyclist dying, but you're never going to make it go away.

7. Oh, that's not all he's done.
Janklow is a scumbag. Do a google search on "Janklow" and "rape" or "rapist" and see what you get. He should've been in prison DECADES ago. More republican honor and integrity!!

9. I bet you get more hits...
if you do a search for clinton and rape. Janklow is indeed a scumbag. But innocent until proven guilty.

10. I agree...
with Napi21. About 15 years ago we had a County Commissioner that was stopped because he was swerving all over the road. He cussed out the deputy that stopped him. The deputy noticed that there was a gun on the front seat. He wanted to arrest the commissioner but called HQ. He was told to let the commissioner go. Then the commissioner went home and shot and killed his wife!

11. Uh, Janklow WAS proven guilty.
Records were expunged. To compare him with Clinton is beneath contempt. Shame on you.

Janklow took the unprecedented step of suing retail bookstores to try and stop Peter Mathiassen's book about Peltier--in which this and other unflattering things are revealed about Janklow--and was soundly smacked down by the supreme court (everything in the book was documented, therefore no libel case for Janklow). You might want to do a little homework before you start talking to me about "unproven" allegations against that lowlife.

25. Yes I am sure you are correct but what sites would you get?
Every one of them would be right wing propaganda sites. Clinton was exonerated on virtually every single charge leveled against him and Lord knows there were many many charges leveled. All unsubstantiated. It is all the right wing can do is smear smear smear. No integrity at all exists within their midsts.

17. Janklow should be in jail, marrying some guy named "Musclez".
How is it that bastard can avoid all these tickets, then KILL a person, and get just a few months in the slammer? The animal needs to be jailed with the key melted and lock fused.

20. They wuld never win. The cops must go by who is politically
connected at the time>>> that's the bottom line, and if they don't kiss their careers goooooooooodbye. That is why I think Chiefs of police should be a elected position.

21. There should be legal protections for police officers who ticket public
officials, like tripple damages plus a fixed award, if their superiors punish them for doing their jobs.

from the truth. Unfortunately for rank and file. On top of that picture an officer who did not know whom he pulled over and gave a ticket to.??? It's a rank and file dilemma.

23. This is sadly the case. One politician here was getting stopped...
...often for drunk driving. He was taken home each time. One of my friends stopped him once and took him home instead of arresting him. I asked why he did not take him to jail and he just said that that was something that you just do not do. Before the elections the opposing party did make an exception to this rule, even going so far as to get the police video of the "drunk test" and using it in the campaign ads. :)
