2 Naval Academy Sophomores Accused of Raping Classmates Last Year

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Two Naval Academy sophomores were charged with raping two classmates during a Commissioning Week party in their dorm room last year, an academy official said.

Two female sophomores testified at a June 30 military hearing outside Annapolis that midshipmen Eric Bailey, 24, and Todd Thurston, 20, gave them alcohol and raped them at the May 2002 party during graduation week, The (Annapolis) Capital reported Wednesday.

The men are charged with rape, conduct unbecoming an officer and an alcohol charge, an academy spokesman, Cmdr. Rod Gibbons, said Wednesday.

Lawyer William Ferris, who represents both midshipmen, denied the allegations, saying the sex was consensual.
