At least 14 Iraqis were killed when a car bomb tore through a tent packed with hundreds of people mourning a man who died in an assassination attempt of a local official.
Yesterday’s blast in the town of Khalis, north east of Baghdad, left a yard-wide crater, set five cars on fire and burned the tent. Dismembered corpses lay on the floor. White plastic chairs where mourners had been sitting in orderly rows were broken and twisted.
Elsewhere, seven US Marines were killed in western Iraq, the military said. Two died in action on Monday, while a third died of his wounds on Monday. Four other Marines were killed yesterday while conducting security and stability operations.
An armed vigilante group also threatened to kill Abu Musab al-Zarqawi for insurgency attacks that have killed Iraqis, making the first internal threat against the Jordanian militant who recently warned Prime Minister Iyad Allawi that he is a target for assassination.
