White House Threatens Spending Bill Veto If Patriot Act Is Weakened
ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, July 7, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(07-07) 16:32 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

The White House threatened Wednesday to veto a wide-ranging spending bill if the House uses it to weaken the USA Patriot Act, raising the prospect of an election-year fight over President Bush's quest for expanded powers to counter terrorists.

The warning came as Rep. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., prepared to try amending the spending measure with a provision making it harder for the government to order libraries or book sellers to provide records to investigators. The vote seemed likely to occur Thursday.

The Patriot Act, passed in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, strengthened the government's surveillance and detention powers. Bush has since tried to expand its reach, but the bill has been criticized by Democrats and conservative Republicans for going too far.

so the story goes...

we'll see whose pork gets protected.

The RW shows it's hand--what is there in THe PATRIOT act which makes it more important than the entire budget?

unlimited executive pwer. that's what. What happens to Shrub's plans in 2005 if he doesn't have the Patriot Act anymore? And what are those plans?

13. Bernie Sanders: Patriot Warrior
Double Dog Dare bush* to veto this!!!!

If you would like to hear more from Bernie Sanders (Independent, VT), go to:

http://homepage.mac.com/benburch/Hartmann.html

Scroll down to any FRIDAY show. You can right click the show and save it to disk to be replayed at your convenience.

Tom Hartman does a show with Bernie Sanders every Friday called "Brunch with Bernie" that is OUTSTANDING. I wish our Democrats sounded and voted like this guy.

Bernie used to work with Wellstone (before the murder), Kucinich, and a few others in a group known as the Congressional Progressive Caucus which was formed to try to stop the conservative swing of the DLC/DNC.

20. ...the president's senior advisers would recommend a veto."
Wait a minute, isn't he Fearless Leader? Doesn't he make big grown-up decisions all day long? Isn't that HIS PRINCIPAL APPEAL?

It sounds like 9-11: he was the big hero wanting to return to Washington, instead of high-tailing it to Louisiana and then Nebraska, but somehow he got overruled by those who actually rule.

Doesn't he even have the spine to throw down the gauntlet himself?

Geez. This is just idiotic, and I love it.
