Pa. Officials Find Artwork in Schools (Worth Tens of Millions)
PHILADELPHIA -- To the delight of school officials, a multimillion-dollar treasure trove of 19th- and 20th-century art has been discovered in basements, boiler rooms, closets and hallways in Philadelphia's cash-strapped public schools.

The artworks -- 1,200 works in all, including paintings, sketches, sculptures, murals, tapestries and ancient artifacts -- had been donated to the school system or bought for small sums long ago.

But over the decades, many of them were taken down when the walls were painted and were put into storage, where they apparently were forgotten altogether.

The collection is probably worth tens of millions of dollars, school officials and art experts said.

5. I went to elementary school near there
And I have distinct memories of some amazing paintings in our decrepit old building, which was condemned when I was in 2nd grade.

These were full-on oil paintings, many of them portraits.

9. How maRVELOUS!!
What a wonderful thing..

I hope someone has the forethought to designates ownership of the priceless collection to the school district before a municipal/state or federal government step in to commandeer the collection by eminent domain, years down the road..
