In first appearance together, Kerry-Edwards ticket stresses positive

By Thomas Fitzgerald

Knight Ridder Newspapers

CLEVELAND - Sen. John Kerry introduced his new running mate Wednesday as a "different kind of electricity," hoisting Sen. John Edward's arm into the air to a thunderous roar from thousands packed into a park off Lake Erie.

In their first day of campaigning as the Democratic ticket, the two men focused on the theme of fighting for the middle class and milked Edwards' homespun, forelock-tugging speaking style for all it was worth. They salted their remarks with references to optimism, hope, responsibility, values and faith.

It was a day of imagery more than substance, a chance to roll out the entire Heinz-Kerry and Edwards clans as America's newest blended political family, a contemporary "Brady Bunch" cast as a team.

Kerry said Edwards was prepared to help him "restore America's values" as a champion of the middle class, adding that he got to know him when they were rivals in last winter's primaries. Of their Republican opponents, Kerry said: "We've got better vision. We've got better ideas. We've got real plans. We have a better sense of what's happening in America, and we have better hair."

3. Probably a reference to Cheney's lack of hair, youth, and appeal
to women. ;)

2. I hope they keep it up!
In contrast, Bushco will look like the a-holes they are.
