Pentagon Says Nine More Guantanamo Detainees Will Face Trials
July 8 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush designated nine Guantanamo Bay prisoners as eligible to stand trial, bringing to 15 the number of detainees who may face military tribunals, the Defense Department said.

The names of the nine weren't released. Mamdouh Habib, an Australian national held at Guantanamo, is expected to be one of the nine, said Steve Ingram, a spokesman for Attorney General Philip Ruddock. David Hicks, another Australian, was named among the first six detainees who will stand trial.

Terror court unlawful: lawyer

But the lawyer for Australian terror suspect Mamdouh Habib today said military commissions like the one his client was expected to face were illegal, and he would challenge them in the American court system.

"Under the international law, any military commission has to comply with the standards of normal rules of evidence.

"Yet these commissions say they'll allow hearsay evidence and admissions obtained under duress.

And US lawyer Steve Watts, from the Centre for Constitutional Rights in New York, claimed Habib had been the subject of what US authorities called "rendition", in which people are taken to countries such as Egypt where the use of torture for interrogation is allegedly commonplace.
