Dean answering Nader's challenge for Democrats
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Howard Dean is emerging as perhaps the Democrats' best answer to the threat posed by independent Ralph Nader because he appeals to many of the same progressive-leaning voters as the consumer activist does.

Democratic candidate John Kerry can largely ignore the Nader candidacy even as one of the party's high profile crowd pleasers takes him on, as Dean plans to do Friday in a debate organized by National Public Radio.
...
Dean said his appearance in Friday's debate was not part of a grand Democratic strategy. He agreed to the debate, he said, but only after checking with the Kerry campaign to be sure it would not overshadow the campaign.

"We did check with the Kerry campaign because of that consideration," Dean said in a telephone interview.

A spokeswoman from the Kerry campaign said Dean's contribution was welcome, but Kerry himself was the best messenger.
...
Corrado said Dean's appeal across the Democratic base, particularly among progressives, would guarantee him a prominent role thorugh November.

"I think Governor Dean is going to have a very high profile in the campaign, not just because he appeals to the progressive wing and can answer some of those particularly who might support Nader ... but also because of the fact he has shown broad appeal within the party, particularly among younger voters and nontraditional voters," Corrado said.

1. Do you know if this will be televised?
Perhaps on CSPAN?

I'd like to see it... this is a GREAT use of Dean's talents.

6. Should be a good debate.
I was just listening to Nadar give a speech on the radio,
and it was a kick-ass speech. Between the two of them they
should light things up pretty good. :-)

5. Let's ask From and Reed

snip>
“But the great myth of the current cycle,” DLC leaders Al From and Bruce Reed wrote in a May 15, 2003 memo, “is the misguided notion that the hopes and dreams of activists represent the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. “What activists like Dean call the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party is an aberration: the McGovern-Mondale wing, defined principally by weakness abroad and elitist, interest-group liberalism at home.”

8. Like Dean says...
"If they're calling me a liberal, it just shows how far the party has moved to the right"

How thick those blinders must be.

9. Could that possibly be because Nader has good points?
I think his voice should be heard in the debate.

16. Doesn't really matter if he does or not
Either way, from a strategic sense it's a bad move for Dean.

25. Go, Dean!
My only worry is that the good doctor will start diagnosing Nader's late-life case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on stage and get flustered.
