Human rights groups have welcomed Angola signing up for the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Thursday.

Angola was among three Southern African countries to join the APRM during the closing ceremony of the African Union (AU) summit. Also acceding were Malawi and Lesotho, bringing the total number of signatories to the mechanism to 23.

The APRM, overseen by a panel, monitors a country's progress towards political and economic reform, and was put in place earlier this year. Besides reviewing the governance record, the panel would also examine the country's socio-economic development.

Justin Pearce, a researcher with Human Rights Watch (HRW), described Angola's move as a "positive development". But he added that the New York-based organisation was "going to wait and see to what extent Angola's peers in the AU are prepared to investigate the country and hold it accountable to the standards ".
