Daschle denies hugging Moore
There was no hug between "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle at the film's June 23 premiere in Washington, D.C., Daschle said Thursday.

When asked about Moore's account of a hug after the premiere and the criticism Daschle has received for it, the South Dakota Democrat said he and Moore did not embrace. Daschle said his schedule forced him to arrive late and leave early.

"I know we senators all tend to look alike. But I arrived late, and I had to leave early for Senate votes. I didn't meet Mr. Moore," Daschle said.

In a lengthy Time magazine piece about the movie and its political effects, Richard Corliss reported Moore's criticism of Daschle's leadership and the filmmaker's account of a hug with Daschle.

9. He also represents a conservative-leaning state
But fortunately the Democrats from SD are smart enough to realize this. That is why SD has an all Democratic congressional delegation, while liberal states like NY and CA still send a significant number of Republicans to Washington, DC.

If it didn't happen, it didn't happen. Do you want him to lie about it?

6. Look for the media to give this more attention than
pretty much any of the BushCo* crime family's offensives. More followup on this than, say, the sadly loast microfische records. :sniff:

14. Okay...one or more of these three guys is lying....
...Moore, Daschle, and/or Corliss. Since my opinions of Daschle and any of the mainstream reporters is not very good, that leaves Moore as the guy telling the truth. JMHO.

25. umm... faulty logic?
We don't know what Moore said. We only know what Corliss wrote that Moore said. So either...
1. Corliss is lying about what Moore said and Daschle is telling the truth OR
2. Corliss is telling the truth and Moore told Corliss the truth and Daschle is lying OR
3. Corliss is telling the truth and Moore told Corliss a lie and Daschle is telling the truth.

Of course, one person's "lie" is another person's "joke." I think Moore probably did tell that to Corliss but was making an obvious joke... or maybe pulling Corliss' leg in a not-so-obvious joke.

The other possibility is that somebody is confused.

Daschel, who's scared of being called a (gasp) democrat or Moore, who's afraid of nothing except another Bush term?

26. C'mon, Moore's not close to that honest
I mean, it would be within Moore's basic personality to get carried away and claim hyperbolically that he hugged Daschle. When doing films and books, he can edit, but I've watched him in person talk himself into corners.

Like it matters, though. More likely, it's just bad memory on someone's part.

23. Why would Daschle even dignify this with a response?
This is journalism? Egads! Where do they get these people to follow up on this crapola? No wonder the US is a laughingstock around the world. We can't be bothered with real journalism or digging deeper into important issues. No, we have "journalists" (and I use that term lightly)who can only focus on this sort of pablum.

29. Here's why (from a South Dakota Democrat)
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 04:05 PM by bleowheels
Today, Sen. Daschle's opponent, former Congressman John Thune unleashed his campaign. Radio ads start today, Television ads start next week. Thune will do anything to tie Sen. Daschle to the Hollywood Liberals. South Dakota is a state that always votes Republican for President but fortunately our state's delegation in Washington is comprised solely by Democrats. For a small state with 38,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats, the tagline is often that "we (the voters of SD) need a delegation that represents our President." And with our past congressional (special election to replace Janklow) and Senatorial (Thune vs. Sen. Tim Johnson)elections being decied by less than 1000 votes, the Republicans will do anything for a win. Some Native Americans were turned away from the polls (Florida Anyone?) last month for the Congressional special election. Thune has already trotted out the proposed amendment to change the Constitution to ban same sex marriage. Yesterday, he challenged Sen. Daschle to vote for it. And Bill Frist has campaigned for him already (the first time a Sen. Maj. Leader has actively campaigned against a Sen. Min. Leader in his him state. This race is gonna get nasty. Oh by the way, Last week Jerry Seinfeld performed here and guess who the last person into the theater before the show was? That's right Republican John Thune. He waited til everyone was seated so that EVERYONE would see him enter.

27. I don't know if they hugged or not, but...
...Daschle shouldn't be so fucking anxious to deny that a hug took place. He is so gutless. Why not just say, "What if we did hug, what's your point?"
