Ken (Lay) sure got around! CEO tied to Kerrys, too

President Bush may know indicted ex-Enron boss Ken Lay as ``Kenny Boy,'' but Sen. John F. Kerry and his millionaire wife also have past financial and personal ties to Lay's shamed energy firm, documents show.

Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry reported more than $250,000 in Enron stock ownership before the firm's 2003 collapse. Kerry also was forced to return a campaign contribution from an implicated Enron executive.

And Heinz Kerry served on a charity board with Lay, even after he was implicated in the alleged fraud, records show.

<snip>

Kerry's campaign took $1,000 from an executive of Enron Wind in November 2001, a check he returned a few months later. He also took $250 from an Enron accountant in May - a check he won't return, Meehan said, because that donor hasn't been implicated in the alleged fraud.

A Heinz family trust bought between $250,000 and $500,000 of stock in December 1995, just days before Heinz Kerry announced Lay would serve as a member of the Heinz Center philanthropy, Kerry's Senate financial disclosure documents show.

Gawd that Boston paper is shameless! Let's bring up miniscule contributions and ties from 9 years ago! Sounds like Bushie trying to claim Anne Richards knew Kenny better.

1. Yeah, it's practically the same
Kerry took a $1000 contribution that he returned

Bush received $1.14 million in contributions and used Lay's private jet for campaigning.

2. Check out this misleading sentence
And Heinz Kerry served on a charity board with Lay, even after he was implicated in the alleged fraud, records show.

What's wrong with that? It was a charitable organization, not Enron. Why would she end her association with it because Lay was on the board, too?

12. It Was An Environmental Charity, IIRC.
one can see why Teresa was on the board. She has a solid record of making people's lives better.

As for Lay... probably for public relations.

3. They owned ENRON stock!
So did all those poor employees. I guess being a victim of Enron's thievery is the same as being a thief.

Holy Cheney! That's some Cheneying heavy Enron investing!

15. And the Heinz Trust sold the stock in 97
I'd love to know why since Enron was on the way up at that point. Maybe the trust didn't want to associate with the POS company.

The stock brought between $5,000 and $15,000 in dividends in 1996 before it was sold in 1997, the disclosure forms show.

6. 2003?
Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry reported more than $250,000 in Enron stock ownership before the firm's 2003 collapse. I believe Enron went bankrupt in November or December of 2001. Wuhhhh?

13. A LOT Of Americans Were Invested In Enron Before It Collapsed.
Many of them teachers whose pension funds had Enron in them.

And Enron employees as well.

And regular investors.

Brokerage houses were hard selling Enron... weren't they?

It was a "sure thing".

14. Hell, *I* had Enron holdings...
Through a mutual fund. Janus Fund, to be specific, which at one time was honest and well managed. Then Tom Bailey, the founder, retired, and a bunch of punkass yuppie barracudas ran it into the ground. Arseholes. Fortunately, I'd held it mong enough that when I cashed out I didn't lose any principal.

7. Why are people surprised by such things? It's the rich vs. the poor
Kerry and Edwards are rich. Almost 100% of the Congressional members are on the take, and most especially the Senate members.

8. Fox tried to sell lie last night"Lay went Dem in 95" - so not Bush problem
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 12:35 PM by papau
I was shocked I tell you to hear this coming from such a respected news media cable news station.

And Award winning Brit Hume was the moderator who got these comments into the record.

Shocked, I tell you. Shocked!

Amazing what a few dollars to a lady in a Texas govern. race will do to your reputation as a conservative. No one looks at the millions given the Bushs - or the post hundred dollar misunderstanding party with the Bush's that are on NBC's tapes, or the secret energy policy meetings with the VP. You are tar and feathered as a closet Dem by Fox.

I am shocked!

:-)

9. Nice try, B. Herald, but no cigar. Not even REMOTELY close to the...
...relationship between Lay and FratBoy.

Weak pablum from the Boston Herald. Very weak.

A truly pathetic attempt at scandal-mongering by the Boston Herald.
