WASHINGTON - Solicitor General Theodore Olson used his final day as the Bush administration's top Supreme Court lawyer to lament the court's decision siding with foreign terrorism suspects over the president.

He said Friday that the court term that ended last week held no good news for conservatives, especially the ruling that opened American courts to "enemy combatants" being held at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"U.S. courts ... have never been extended so far," Olson told members of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group.

Olson, whose wife died in the plane that crashed into the Pentagon (news - web sites) during the Sept. 11 attacks, had argued before the justices that the president needed broad powers to hold and interrogate foreigners who might pose future threats without giving them access to courts.

1. I feel for Mr. Olson's loss
Losing his wife that way has got to be very hard.
I just wish he found a more constructive way to deal with it.

3. The decision...
... did not "side with terrorists". It sided with people who are incarcerated without trial, without hearing, without anything.

Do we really want to trust our freedom to the same bunch of fools who thought there were WMDS, a nuclear program, that the Iraqis would greet us with flowers?

Not me.

The fact that the gulag is not on American soil per se means nothing, it is under American control. Why these folks can't get it through their heads that the constitutions still applies is beyond me.

4. Unfortunately, Charma is a very powerful thing Mr. Olson.
I felt true sorrow for your loss, but what goes around, comes around.

Gore -v- Bush Never forget.
