Calif. man admits to post-Sept. 11 scheme (face recognition tech scam)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A man charged with defrauding investors by claiming to have developed a face-recognition system after the 2001 terrorist attacks pleaded guilty Friday to wire and securities fraud, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorney's office said Ross Allen Rojek, 37, admitted bilking investors out of more than $1 million.

Attorneys said Rojek used false names and claimed his firm, Face Information Technology, consisted of three former Netscape Communications executives.

Rojek also admitted defrauding investors with a scheme to acquire commercial properties at below-market values and resell them at a profit.

3. Jeez. I know this assclown.
He used to own a comic book store called Beyond the Pale. I used to buy a lot of comics—Dan Clowes, Seth, Bob Crumb, Chester Brown, Julie Doucet, etc.—from him. He even carried the first versions of hometown comix hero Adrian Tomine's 'Optic Nerve'; now Tomine's stuff appears pretty regularly in 'The New Yorker.' Rojak used to have some pretty good in-stores, too, with Clowes, Brown, Seth, etc.

He bought another comic store called Comics & Comix, and then he burned a bunch of people on some boxed DVD set of the TV series 'My So-Called Life.' Then the scam he got popped for.

Enjoy your stay in the Greybar, Ross.
