US accused of political pettiness at AIDS meeting
US accused of political pettiness at AIDS meeting
11 Jul 2004 14:26:41 GMT

By Patricia Reaney

BANGKOK, July 11 (Reuters) - The editor of a leading medical journal accused the U.S. government on Sunday of limiting the number of U.S. scientists who could attend an international AIDS conference because of "political pettiness".

The United States has sent fewer scientists to this year's AIDS meeting than in previous years and given costs as the reason for scaling back.

Catherine DeAngelis, editor-in-chief of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), said the move could affect efforts to tackle the epidemic.

"It stymies the ability of scientists to discuss and to learn from each other. It is wrong," she told reporters.

"It is an incredible example of political pettiness. It is anti-intellectual and it is interfering with scientists and the scientific process and means American government-employed scientists are not allowed to be here to share their knowledge."

1. You have to understand the GOP position on AIDS
It's punishment from God. And who are they to interfere with the almighty?

6. JAMA is nothing to mess with. Plenty of doctors are Republicans.
JAMA represents the medical establishment in the U.S., and it isn't wise to piss them off.

That sound you hear is the last straw breaking for more people who voted for Bush in 2000 and won't support him again.

feels about those pesky little facts. They sure don't let them interfere with policy and we wouldn't want to start talking about condoms in this election year. Oh no! That would upset the base. What complete and utter bullshit on multiple levels.

7. Another example of KKKristian Lysenkoism
The Nazi Republican Party has made it clear that you must toe the KKKristian line and if you don't, too bad.

They need to remember how Lysenkoism fucked up the Soviet Union, and we're going down that same path to collapse. But the Nazis don't care. After all, Jesus is coming in a wek or 2 to take them away...
