China getting rattled by US' naval deployments
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 12:33 AM by dArKeR
AFP , BEIJING

China is getting edgy over a new US military strategy aimed at projecting force around the globe and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice's visit last week was an attempt to calm Beijing down, analysts said.

Rice's trip on Thursday and Friday came as the US military was rolling out an unprecedented deployment of naval power to the Pacific Ocean in what is officially being termed a military exercise, they said.

"It is an unprecedented show of force and a return to gunboat diplomacy," said Andrew Tam, a security expert at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies in Singapore.

"The US is sending the message that any threat to peace and stability in Northeast Asia will not be tolerated.

That currently the Navy is pretty much out of a job and needs to remind everyone that they are still around come budget time. They want their piece of the pie too!

25. I Tend To Think It Is A Show Of Force . . .
to demonstrate that even though our ground forces are overstretched, we still have capabilities to stage "punishment expeditions" (to use a term from ca. WW I).

If they indeed have a target, my bet is Iran. The Inner Party members make way to much money on cheap Chinese labor to threaten that cash cow.

6. The USA is run by adolescents! This reminds me of
my sons playing in a sandbox as kids and running their matchbox cars into each other
Ignorant territorial crap by little kids, starting fights and behaving like angst filled teenagers.
Mothers of the world need to grab these boys by their ears and pull them back and force them into a time out, a severe time out.
Damn kids in power.

7. Let's review NeoCon planning in regards to China, shall we?.....
...the link below is a book review that ought to be MANDATORY reading for ALL DUers. Sending the Navy off the coast of China is NOT just saber-rattling by the NeoCons:

Neo-Conservatives and the Global Order
America Alone by Jonathan Clarke and Stefan Halper

<http://www.antiwar.com/utley/?articleid=2951>

Excerpt:

"This book is the definitive study of how a small group of dedicated imperialists took over America's foreign policy. Loaded with footnotes and bibliography, it follows those who made the current disaster in America's relations with most of the world. Chickenhawk academic intellectuals in Washington think tanks, with visions of military glory, knowing little of the outside world, and without military or business experience, generated the 'go it alone/international law be damned' warfare agenda.

'Neocons,' write the authors, 'always emphasized unilateral military force ('preemptive and unilateral war') as America's first and often only option,' ignoring America's 'soft power,' political or economic, as a means to attain international objectives. They quote neocon Max Boot, who wrote in the Wall Street Journal that he was 'looking forward to a new era when America, like the British Empire, will always be fighting some war, somewhere, against someone.'"

....snip....

"The authors remind us that the neoconservatives wanted a military confrontation with China before 9/11. Although many are accused of having an Israel First bias, it's not fair to say that is their only concern. Their Wolfowitz Doctrine was to take down any rising power in the world. Most of them also supported the Kosovo war. Indeed, Bush waffled when that war started, until Wolfowitz rushed down to Texas to persuade the governor to support it."

17. Something doesn't quite ring true here
The article says.."The authors remind us that the neoconservatives wanted a military confrontation with China before 9/11."
One of the first things that happened in this administration is a conflict with China over them taking our spy plane and Bush* backed down and apologized to China just to get our airmen home. He never so much as greeted them after their re;lease but they did get home. If we were looking for a confrontation we had it in spades and buckled under.

9. I disagree somewhat with the points here
China is the MOST FAVORED Nation as far as trade goes-Neocons love China because Walmart gets all its products there without paying living wages to its people. Corporation CEOs of the great multinationals get slave labor. Neocons want war in the ME because of oil. Besides the Armageddon is in the ME.

13. not mutually exclusive
War with China doesn't mean the US (or the elites if you will) couldn't benefit economically from China's resources and labor pool. Just look at Iraq, or most other so called undemocratic states. War = the fight over resources/wealth.

And China's response:

Report: China's Military Plans Exercises on Taiwan Strait This Month

By Joe McDonald Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 4, 2004

BEIJING (AP) - China intends to hold military exercises this month across the strait from Taiwan, as Beijing builds up its capability to back up its frequent threats to invade the island.
The annual summer exercises will be held this year on Dongshan Island off the Chinese coast and will include air, sea and land forces, the China Youth Daily said Saturday. The newspaper didn't give a date or say how many troops would take part.

China's military holds such drills at different points along the coast facing Taiwan every summer, practicing beach landings and attacks on shore targets by ships and warplanes. Tens of thousands of troops take part....

..snip..

Beijing has spent heavily in recent years to expand the PLA's naval arm, building warships and landing craft that could support an invasion and other forces that could help blockade Taiwan.

The reference by the China Youth Daily to joint air, sea and land drills this year highlights recent efforts by Beijing to integrate its forces for complex maneuvers - a key part of any possible attack on Taiwan but one in which China lacks experience.

..snip..

Exercises at Dongshan in 2001 involved advanced aircraft and ships, amphibious tanks and submarines. Accounts of the numbers of troops taking part ranged from 10,000 to more than 100,000.

Chinese news reports at the time said the 2001 exercises were meant to practice seizing an outlying Taiwanese island and attack an aircraft carrier - an apparent reference to U.S. naval forces...cont'd

14. October "surprise" -- Bomb hell out on North Korean nuclear program
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 08:59 AM by hansolsen
Bush figures this will take the country's mind off our problems in Iraq. And he also wants to do it now just in case he loses in November.

It's a win / win.

You heard it here first.

27. Considerably dumber than attacking Iraq
DPRK actually has an army, as well as enough conventional and chemical artillery to destroy Seoul in about thirty minutes.

Nevermind their nuclear weapons, which they will probably land on Japan.

26. China, Russia to hold joint military exercises (and India)
http://in.news.yahoo.com/040708/137/2eu0m.html

BEIJING (Reuters) - China and Russia will hold joint military exercises next year, their first since 1999 and intended to tackle a new range of security challenges and nurture their partnership, state media said on Thursday.

The decision was taken during a visit to Moscow by Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, but the scope and timing of the exercises had yet to be decided, the China Daily said.

The navies of the two neighbours that have been developing what they call a "strategic partnership" in recent years, held their first joint exercise in October 1999 when a Russian destroyer and a cruiser visited China.

Russia has been a major supplier of military hardware to China, including advanced ships and fighter planes that have been key to China's drive to modernise the People's Liberation Army.

And India INDIA-CHINA MILITARY COOPERATION

http://www.hindu.com/2004/04/12/stories/2004041201131000.htm

THE PROPOSAL TO hold a joint army exercise with China has come not a day too late. It marks another step forward in the smoothly developing bilateral relationship between the two Asian giants and neighbours. A military exercise involving the two armies is a logical follow-up to the joint naval exercise off the Shanghai coast. Given the fact that peace and tranquillity reign on the long Sino-Indian boundary as a result of a breakthrough high-level understanding forged in December 1988, and that political as well as trade relations are on the upswing, this kind of cooperation can help in creating a better environment for going about the task of resolving the boundary dispute in an amicable way on the basis of give and take. Once a new Government assumes office in New Delhi after the 14th general election, it should be possible for the military establishment to concretise the proposal for a joint army exercise.
