Senate Vote on Stem Cell Policy Not Likely
So stem cell research is "too sensitive" to address this close to the elections but the FMA is not? Ridiculous.

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday it is unlikely the Senate will vote this year to relax Bush administration rules on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, despite widespread support in the Senate.

Frist, a heart-lung transplant surgeon, did not express his own views on the topic but said stem cell research was too sensitive a matter to confront so close to the November elections.

1. Gotta get those dems "on the record" for their FMA vote
but God forbid we get the republicans "on the record" this election year for their stem cell research votes.

Since the dems don't control congress, I don't suppose there is a way they could get this on the floor for a vote could they? Is it possible they could draw up legislation and publicly demand the republicans bring it up for a vote? Would that even work with this leadership?

7. As an amendment, perhaps?
It's possible the Dems could bring this up as an amendment to some other bill. In the Senate amendments to pending bills don't have to be relevant to the bill itself so they can get away with that. Question would be whether the GOP leadership would use some procedural means to avoid a vote.

2. The hypocrasy makes me want to puke
Frist wants to demonize me on the record, but can't get around to doing something that would actually save lives?

He should be stripped of his medical license.

3. My theory on stem cell research
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 04:49 PM by boobooday
As someone who has been insulin-dependent for 25 years, I think that stem cell research is "sensitive" not because it involves human embryos, but because it threatens the profits of the pharmaceutical biggies.

More specifically, it would DECIMATE Eli Lilly if a cure were found for diabetes. They have built their empire on people like me. And they are deeply in bed with the Bushies. Poppy was on the board of directors, they are major contributors, and remember Mitch Daniels? He's a former Eli Lilly exec who is now a candidate for Governor of Indiana, home of Eli Lilly.

And think about it, Diabetes, Parkinsons, Alzheimer's -- all chronic diseases that people live with for YEARS, but only with the help of expensive pharmaceuticals.

Call me cynical -- that's my theory.

...same goes for cures for cancer, aids, etc. the pharmaceutical companies make hundreds of billions of dollars a year on the treatments....the last thing they want is a cure.

6. The basic immorality of profiting from the misery of others
I really believe that we won't have universal health care until we make the point that profiting from the illness and misery of others is IMMORAL.

The same goes for the prison-for-profit industry.
