Dems Reject Senate GOP Bid on Gay Marriage
Democrats Reject Senate Republicans' Bid to Offer Different Versions of Gay Marriage Amendment

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON July 12, 2004 — Senate Republicans prepared two versions of a constitutional amendment on marriage Monday, unable to agree among themselves on how best to get a vote on a measure that President Bush made an election-year priority for Congress.

The likely outcome is that neither proposal will get a direct vote after Democrats just last week had agreed to allow one.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said there was "great interest" among Republicans for a simpler approach that would add only one line to the U.S. Constitution: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

Democrats rejected Frist's request to hold votes on both it and the original version that included another sentence: "Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any state, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidence thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."

2. GOP giving cover to moderates
they can vote FOR one and AGAINST the other and talk out of both sides of their mouths.

3. I'm voting Kerry
-To keep Fundies off the US SC, that has now become more of a world court

-For the environment

As for Iraq and a host of other issues, I don't see much difference between Kerry and Bush.

I am an environmental advocate though, and recognize the need to get Bush out.

5. There is a big difference between Kerry and Bush re: Iraq
Kerry wouldn't have gotten us in there in the first place.

Kerry is unlikely to extend the policy of preemptive invasions to other countries.

Reselect Bush, and he will invade everybody on Earth and start WW III, which he and his followers want to do anyway because they think it will trigger the Rapture.

4. This isn't true
I watched today. Democrats wanted to vote. The republicans were the ones not wanting to vote today.

The republicans were using a stall tactic of introducing new resolutions to be voted on today so they could say Democrats were stalling the vote.

BUT the democrats said they were ready to vote today on the original amendment...and the repukes stalled.

Because this whole mess is basically a diversion...a hail mary pass , if you will. it doesn't have a snowballs chance in georgia of passing but they are trying.

6. True
The fact that they believe in starting wars to build a Jesus landing pad is a scary thought in and of itself.

12. it has been reported -- that behind 'closet' doors
republicans are admitting the amendment would not pass, and this is all a stunt to make it a campaign issue

7. So much for Republicans and their love for 'State's Rights'
Another lie exposed....what do these people stand for? Other than starting wars for corporate profits?

"Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any state, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidence thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."

Nice of these Republican federalcrats to dictate what every state must have in their Constitutions. Why can't Republicans support civil rights? Too expansive a concept to get their mind around it?

This Corporate Criminal Party is morphying into the Corporate Theocratic Party as we approach the election. Good, I think this will further blowback in their face as more undecideds break to Kerry/Edwards....people who consider the idea seriously - they will not want to live in the Republican's vision of America's future.

9. Yay!
would add only one line to the U.S. Constitution: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

How about one line to the U.S. Constitution:
"Upon every birth, articles of incorporation will be issued instead of a birth certificate."
or
"Only U.S. human citizens are allowed to donate to politicians, political organizations, and campaigns. All corporations are expressly forbidden from interfering in political matters in anyway whatsoever, under penalty of dissolution of articles of incorporation."

10. Can't wait to follow up on this.
I'd read that many GOP Senators wanted Frist to shelve this, because they knew this wasn't a path they wanted to go down this year. But Frist wanted the Dems to have to pound a stake in the sand on the issue, and make their positions public, before the election. It'll be interesting to see who fell where. And it'll be interesting to see where the backlash lands. Methinks it may backfire.
