July 12, 2004 | BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A Philippine official said Tuesday the country would withdraw its troops from Iraq "as soon as possible" in response to kidnappers' demands. But it was unclear if such a pullout would come ahead of its scheduled Aug. 20 departure.
Philippine Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Rafael Seguis went on the Pan Arab television station al-Jazeera Tuesday morning and appealed to the kidnappers holding Angelo dela Cruz to release him.
Insurgents have said they would kill dela Cruz, 46 if the Philippines did not pull its 51-member peacekeeping force out of Iraq by July 20. The government in the past had ignored that demand, restating that its troop commitment ended Aug. 20.
Seguis said Tuesday the Philippines would pull its troops out "as soon as possible."
