Shaw’s Supermarkets start storewide layoffs (MA/RI 275 jobs)

FALL RIVER --More than five weeks after announcing plans to "initiate" layoffs of several hundred full-time, store-level workers, Shaw’s Supermarkets commenced layoff procedures Monday at many of its targeted 39 stores in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

UFCW Local 791 union spokesman Peter Derouen and store clerks confirmed that numerous full-time workers were called into management offices on Monday and told that their jobs were being eliminated.

The original number of 224-242 workers to be laid off will reach as many as 275 before the layoffs are over, Shaw’s insiders said.

During recent meetings that store managers held with full-time workers, future options with Shaw’s were discussed and workers were presented employee packages to assist them during the transition process.
