4. They recycle them using the components in new computers...
many people buying puters for the first time for astronomically reduced prices, find out later on, when puter literate geeks take them for a spin, the hard drives contain other peoples info on them..ha!

9. I kind of doubt it
Even bargain computers have components that are way above the specs of the old p133 that I'll be turning in. Nobody buys a computer with a 650 MB drive and 28.8 modem, and 16 MB of RAM anymore.

8. I got you beat, honey... I have a Commodore 64 upstairs and, if I didn't
chuck it out the last time I cleaned out the garage, I've got an old Texas Instruments computer that runs on cassette tapes. Any buyers?

15. my first computer....
*sigh*

I was in college and remember what an absolute kick it was to use a primitive word processor (ALL CAPS!) instead of writing multiple drafts of papers on my old Underwood.

7. What are they doing with them?
Will they all end up at a landfill in China?

It sounds nice saying "Customers can recycle" but most of the components in older PC's are not recycle friendly.

12. You're right
I saw a news magazne (60 minutes?) do a story on "recycled" electronics. Most of the parts wound up in trash heaps in China and other parts of developing Asia.

And the people who work with the trashed parts get sick because no safety standards exist to ensure people handle this stuff safely.

13. Cool, I have some old nonworking monitors to dump
I tend to "recycle" my old computer hardware to less fortunate friends and family, so the only old junk I have around is a 12" VGA monitor, a 17" flatscreen that died after a horrible Mountain Dew accident, and another 17" that died when my cat knocked it off the desk.

16. need to see if this is done safely and evironmentally sound...
if they dump the old PC's and components in China they will most likely be unsafe and poison people. (full of heavy metals such as lead)

if it is done in the US, usually costs $10 per PC and is certified to be safe to labor and the environment.
