Gay Marriage Ban Divides Senate Republicans
Gay Marriage Ban Divides Senate Republicans; Aim Now to Salvage Respectable Defeat

WASHINGTON (AP) - Short on votes and beset by internal divisions, Senate Republicans struggled Tuesday to salvage a respectable defeat for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, an issue that President Bush pushed toward the top of the election-year agenda.

I really didn't expect a different result, but I've been watching for this headline all day, and it's great to finally see it!

Asshat?!?
That's hilarious!!

Here's a great Santorum quote from that AP article...

In a strongly worded speech, Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said some criticism runs along these lines: "Marriage is hate. Marriage is a stain. Marriage is an evil thing. That's what we hear. People who stand for traditional marriage are haters, they're bashers, they're mean-spirited, they're intolerant. ... Well, we're not," he added.

Santorum needs to check his ears. He seems to be hearing the word marriage where people are really saying discrimination.

3. good gnus
Now, I wonder how freeper heaven is reacting.
I can only imagine.

Or Faux gnus. I can hear O'Rarely now, "In a disgusting failure of morals, the democrats managed to stymie and destroy a wonderful effort to fix a problem created by activist judges and idiot legislators across this country. now come on, everyone knows that a vast majority of the people think that those sick faggots and lesbos are breaking the law, and that they want to change the law to inflict their dirty lifestyles on us. Well, the democrats should be ashamed for denying us the opportunity to keep America american."

Too bad, bill. reality won out. There is hope for the senate after all.

7. I took a look
Freeper heaven is pissed off as all hell. This is my favorite comment from there. All I can say is, this person needs to get a grip:

To: truthandlife
Lots of people say they are against homosexual "marriage" but when push comes to shove only a minority really care enough to try and actually do anything about it. The moral rot has spread far enough and weakened the national character enough that just about anything is open for discussion these days. The democrat party will NOT disavow homosexual "rights" or homosexual "marriage". The public will NOT rise up to end this and the democrats will discover that their stance on the issue is not the liability it at first appears to be. The courts will continue to advance the homosexual agenda; the politicians will continue to dance around the issue and in another few years (I predict by 2009) homosexual "marriage" will be the norm and those opposing it will be seen as extremist kooks and religious fanatics. I think that by 2010 homosexuals will receive the same legal preferences here that they do in many European countries and in Canada and opposition to their agenda will be effectively muzzled because it will mean large fines and/or jail time to oppose it.

I am feeling a bit pessimistic today.

This one is a close second. Oh no! Fags are going to start running the world! Hide your daughters! No, I mean your sons! No, I mean...

To: *Homosexual Agenda; EdReform; scripter; GrandMoM; backhoe; Yehuda; Clint N. Suhks; saradippity; ...

Homosexual Agenda Ping. I don't know, the Senate pretty much seems like some giant dead animal that is starting to stink bad. Flies buzzing around.

I wish to God that the RINO Senators will be voted out very soon. How hard is it to recall Senators? Of course, it would be great to replace many of the D Senators with real conservative Republicans.

But even with the GOP majority, it seems very hard to get anything good done or bad prevented. (I do understand they need a larger majority to really have power. But they squander what they could have because of RINOS and their appeasing attitude in general. Go along to get along.) Look at the recent rider on the Defense Spending bill - adding "Sexual Orientation" to the already repulsive "Hate Crimes" list of preferred victims.

Big Tent Republicanism is just Nevill Chamberlain saying "peace in our time".

Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.

P.S. If more states enact "gay" marriage permitting laws (if you can call it that, considering f'rinstance in MASS it was just a judge or two that reigned supreme) then the time has come for mass civil disobedience. Anyone - whether they call themselves Christian or any of the many varieties, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, atheist, whatever - who opposes the "gay" agenda should stand up and refuse to cooperate with "gay" marriage. Even at the cost of jobs, money, social approval, or whatever.

What is the use of gaining the world and losing the culture war? Letting the homosexual rights crowd rule the entire world? Keep in mind that if those of us opposed to promoting and normalizing deviance had fought this years ago, we would not be in the sorry pass we are currently sunk in. We should have known better, seen it coming. Primarily people are too entranced by the desire to be comfortable, "liked", and more or less asleep at the wheel.

What is wrong with these people? The Republicans can marry and divorce at will, it's not the breakdown of family values, but a mere mistake by marrying too hastily? But god forbid a gay couple who's been together for 20 years be allowed that right?

But you can read the entire thread of venom and hate here:

That is, if you have the stomach for it.

17. Aren't They?
The second one whose post I listed is rabid. I mean rabid. I've seen him go after gay conservatives, telling them how they're going to burn in hell and how they can be cured. The man is a moron.

The only thing that bothers me with the thread is, a very close friend had posted to it. While he didn't come out against gay marriage, tells me he has nothing against homosexuals and actually insulted one of the bill's sponsors in his post, I'm grappling with whether or not I should ever speak to him again. In the past month and a half, he's gone from somewhat sensible leaning towards moderate to ultra right winger. I'm really torn and I don't know what to do.

5. This Is Indeed Good News
However, most of the Republicans who didn't want to vote on this are doing so because it's a major election year. They know they have gay constituents who are would to mobilize to unseat them if this went through.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois read aloud from a recent statement on the issue by Lynne Cheney, wife of the vice president. "When it comes to conferring legal status on relationships, that is a matter that should be left to the states," he quoted her as saying.

I now have a modicum of respect for the woman. She basically went against her husband and his boss on this issue. Good for her! Noncommittal, while saying it shouldn't be the place of the federal government to legislate love and commitment. I bet her hairdresser or favorite designer is gay and wants to get married.

In a string of speeches during the day, Republicans said their motivation was the defense of marriage, the well-being of children and a desire to prevent unelected judges from amending the constitution from the bench.

Unelected judges? Sounds to me like they're afraid Shrub isn't going to win his bid for reelection and the Supreme Court will get Kerry appointees.

The defense of marriage. From Republicans. Do they mean like Jack Ryan, who wanted his wife to perform public sex acts in clubs? Or Rush Limbaugh, who's been married and divorced how many times and has a drug dependency? When is he being brought up on charges for the illegal scripts anyway? Or Brittany Spears, who has come out for Shrub and such traditional values as a 55 hour wedding? There are gay couples who have been together longer than the marriages of all of them combined.

WTF? Sounds like he's been talking to people whose parents stayed together for the sake of the children. Or perhaps Rush Limbaugh's soon to be ex-wife number whatever?

Wow, that totally slipped my mind. That should happen to more right wingers. Let them deal with it in the family to build some tolerance and stop the hate and fear.

6. Good for the Democrats for taking a stand
This is about a lot more than gay marriage - it's about standing up for the rights of all Americans, and especially those in any minority.

12. There Was No Vote
They couldn't agree on procedure for a vote.

But if you want to see how they vote on other things, or if this comes back up for a vote, visit:

13. revealed for what they are
These pinheads are a loud, obnoxious minority, headed for the dust bin of history along with the segregationists and women's rights opponents. Actually, it's the same crowd; they just keep re-appearing with a repackaged agenda of hate so that they can further attempt to hold back the human race from evolving.
Sure, there are a lot of Americans who don't think gay marriage is "right", so they say so when polled, but because they are Americans they don't think we need a law against it.
