Political Year Long on Talk, Short on Action for House and Senate

W A S H I N G T O N, D C, July 13, 2004 — With all the wrangling over gay marriage this week, the Senate has not been able to take up several pressing issues.

With political conventions and the presidential election
coming up, the legislative session will soon be ending, and for both the House and Senate, this has been a summer long on talk and short on accomplishments.

Congress is running out of time to finish work on some of its most pressing business.

"We have yet to take up the homeland security legislation. We have yet to take up legislation dealing with our borders. We have yet to take up legislation dealing with our ports, our railroads," Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle said.

The Senate has put off dealing with the bill to provide the Homeland Security Department with $33 billion to fund security needs around the country next year.
