Bomb kills 10 in Iraq 'Green Zone'

A MASSIVE car bomb today killed at least ten people at a Baghdad checkpoint near an area housing international offices and embassies.

The blast sent burning wreckage across a wide area and a plume of black smoke rising above the city.

Scores of people, including Iraqi civilian workers and reporters waiting to attend a news conference, were waiting to get into the heavily-defended Green Zone when the bomb went off. Police said more than 40 people had been injured.

"We were gathering outside the convention centre seeking jobs," said one witness, Alla Hassan. "We were thrown to the ground. Then I saw many dead people on the ground."

The area was once the headquarters of the United States occupation authorities, but now houses the US and British Embassies, as well as the offices of the interim Iraqi government.
