Student, University Settle Case Over Objection to Lines With Vulgarities
Student, University Settle Case Over Students' Objection to Lines With Vulgarities
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The University of Utah agreed Wednesday to allow students to opt out of activities that conflict with their religious beliefs, settling a lawsuit brought by a Mormon drama student who refused to recite lines containing the f-word and the Lord's name.
Christina Axson-Flynn, 24, had sued the university in federal court, accusing it of violating her to right to freedom of speech and religion.

She said that after refusing to recite the lines in an acting class during the 1998-99 school year, she feared theater department professors would retaliate against her, so she withdrew from the university.

Under the settlement, she will be reimbursed $3,000 to $4,000 in tuition. The university also agreed to let her to re-enroll, although Axson-Flynn said she planned to attend a different school.

1. I thought this part was funny
quote:"Axson-Flynn said she still plans to pursue acting and does not think she will have trouble in the industry because of her beliefs. She said her mother, a stage actress, and her father, also an actor, have been successful despite their religious convictions."

Her parents are successful actors? Has anyone here ever heard of them? I sure haven't.

How annoying... if you don't want to recite the lines, don't act in that freakin' play. Who is she, now - a collaborator with the writer?

Oh boo hoo hoo such persecution...

I'm sure this little escapade will open many doors... to obscurity, dinner theatre, and rapture films.

4. The university was stupid...
They should NOT have settled.

The student voluntarily withdrew from the university becuase she FEARED she would be retaliated against. There was no retaliation, at least none was mentioned in the article, but becease SHE was afraid, the university is somehow at fault?

They should have stuck to their guns and told her to fuck off.

5. I agree.
If she'd been kicked out for it, I would definitely see room for a lawsuit, but she withdraw because of something that MIGHT happen. For christ's sake, she's in Utah! Last I heard, they weren't all that hostile to Mormons out there...
