AMD sales up 96 percent, returns to profit (Correction)
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5438487

<snip>

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. <AMD.N> on Wednesday reported a quarterly profit after a loss a year earlier, amid healthier demand for personal computers and cellular phones.

In its second quarter, the Sunnyvale, California-based company reported a profit of $32 million, or 9 cents a share, compared to a year-earlier loss of $140 million, or 40 cents a share.

Second-quarter sales rose 96 percent from the last second quarter to $1.26 billion. Wall Street had been expecting a second-quarter profit of 9 cents on revenue of $1.24 billion, according to a survey of analysts by Reuters Estimates.

On Tuesday, AMD's arch-rival, Intel Corp. <INTC.O> posted an 18 percent rise in quarterly revenue but warned that inventories of unsold and unfinished products grew sharply and that profit margins would be weaker than expected for the year.

For the geeky investors.

1. That SUCKS big time. My ex-husband kept all the AMD stocks after our
divorce. I actually was the one researching AMD and urging him to buy AMD stocks.

I am so stupid.

But on the other hand...I am way happier now. That counts for way more than any amount of $$$

2. YAY for AMD!
Oddly enough, once I started building my own computers 8 or so years ago, I never used an Intel chip. Now I know why of course: AMD builds superior, higher-performing hardware.

It also doesn't hurt that Intel's Pentium chips are overhyped and generally $300 more (as per newegg.com pricing).

Oh, AMD also sent me Unreal Tournament 2003 & 2004 after I bought their FX51 64-bit chip...nice touch that.

But I don't have any of their stock.

16. Same here....
... I've used PC to make a living since the 80s. I haven't bought (except 1 out of about 15) an Intel processor in all that time.

AMD processors are just as good as Intel at $200-$400 less money.

3. Good for AMD!
I have been building my own PC's since '94, and have been an AMD fan once the K-6 came out...have been using AMD ever since...cheaper and better, especially since Athlon. I was a true believer when I saw what Intel was doing to the chipset manufacturers prior to the Athlon launch.

5. I am elated!
I started building my own PC's a few years ago and have only built AMD systems. Next system will be sometime next year and an AMD chip of course! I have two that I'm running now, 1.4 ghz and 2.2 and have never had a problem with either one.

P.S. I should buy stock!

11. I don't know.... I'm guessing a jump back to $15 or $16 a share on the
news. Add to that the fact that Intel can't yet compete with the 64 bit CPU and is expecting losses, AMD might be good for some short term gains.

I'm just guessing here, I'm a frikkin' English major so WTF do I know about this stuff except It's a great product and I like where they are headed.

Cheers!

15. It's all small stuff
Greenspan needs to print more. A lot more! I think he'll have
to print $1 trillion dollars over the next six months just to keep
the wheels on. Also, he'll have to stop raising interest rates
and may even have to lower them. If he doesn't, we'll
have deflation, and there's no cure for that.

http://www.goldismoney.info/forums/showthread.php?t=12098

INTC's problem is overcapacity and deflation is the only
cure for that.

Deflation: wait 'til tomorrow to buy, because it'll be cheaper then.

Severe breakdown in AMD today.

7. It's About Time.
Intel really screwed the pooch by sinking a ton of money into Itanium and stubbornly refusing to follow AMD's lead into the 32/64 bit arena (until now). Of course Intel has always operated much like * in it's, damn the public we know whats right, approach. I'm glad to see that AMD was finally able to capitalize on an Intel mistake in such a big way. The first PC I ever bought was an Intel 386-16 and I haven't used an Intel processor (at home) since. I wish I would have bought AMD stock when it was around 8 bucks but I have always had a miserable record when it comes to picking stock. I once convinced a boss of mine to but 100 shares of stock in Atari, at a $1 apiece, after they released the Jaguar. That was a great pick. :eyes:

... and went with the AMD Athlon64 3200+ CPU. It's hellishly fast! I'll never go back to Intel again.

10. There are differences
If you compile your kernel to take advantage of very specific elements, but I've not heard of anything with an out of the box installation of the major distros.

... on AMD machines many times. You can bet that if it were a problem, you could google postings about it in newsgroups in a heartbeat.

Problems with installs are almost never a hardware problem in my extensive experience.

13. I still have my computer with an AMD processor on it
and it works pretty good for having only 64 RAM on it and Windows 98 1st ed. I use it every weekened to listen to talk radio.

It was made in 1999 ... and it works a lot better than these IBM ThinkPads do much of the time.

I like AMD processors. When/if I get another computer, it will be an AMD no doubt.

21. The last 10 or so machines I've built have AMD processors
That includes my main workstation at home. They all work just fine!

BTW I own some Intel stock, and have mutual funds that include AMD. Nothing wrong with a little competition.

19. AMD
Sorry, expect prices to go UP for the Athlon processers. AMD is trying to cut thier "budget" aspect and go for the real money.

22. No, they aren't
In fact they're keeping Socket A CPUs alive for a long time, long after the Athlon XP line is finally killed off. They understand that there's still a huge market in the developing world.

23. Why not
just get an Athlon 64?

The FX lime will ALWAYS be very expensive. It is intended for the enthusiast market that wants to get the absolute best performance possible.

The Athlon 64 line STILL provides very nice performance, but isn't off the wall in price.

Though wait for the socket change and with it dual channel.
