NYT PAGE ONE THURS: BUSH TO DROP CHENEY GOSSIP
Wed Jul 14 2004 18:21:14 ET

The latest theory about Vice President Dick Cheney's future on the Republican ticket, advanced privately by prominent Democrats, including members of Congress, holds that Cheney recently dropped his personal doctor because of drug addiction so that he could hire a new one, who will conveniently tell him in August that his heart problems have made him unfit to run with Bush!

2. not actually... par for the course for Drudge
Here's the actual story on the NYT website:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/15/politics/campaign/15vice.html?hp

It's a story about the rumors going around Washington. Drudge makes it sound like it's a done deal.

Hear the Rumor on Cheney? Capital Buzzes, Denials Aside
BY ELISABETH BUMILLER

Published: July 15, 2004

ASHINGTON, July 14 - In the annals of Washington conspiracy theories, the latest one, about Vice President Dick Cheney's future on the Republican ticket, is as ingenious as it is far-fetched. But that has not stopped it from racing through Republican and Democratic circles like the latest low-carb diet.

The newest theory - advanced privately by prominent Democrats, including members of Congress - holds that Mr. Cheney recently dismissed his personal doctor so that he could see a new one, who will conveniently tell him in August that his heart problems make him unfit to run with Mr. Bush. The dismissed physician, Dr. Gary Malakoff, who four years ago declared that Mr. Cheney was "up to the task of the most sensitive public office" despite a history of heart disease, was dropped from Mr. Cheney's medical team because of an addiction to prescription drugs.

9. F**K!! I knew it! They'll pick some wildly popular Repub
to make Chimpboy look smart for picking him, and they'll get more than enough repubs back in the fold to actually win an election for once. Shit!

12. Zell Miller
The move will be proclaimed "bold".
It shows the President is "above party politics".

The lazy presswhores will love it -- the stories write themselves.

11. Good to see the Times is finally publishing garbage about Republicans!
And, with all due respect, this piece is total, complete and utter garbage. If someone has actual knowledge that Bush is cosidering dropping Cheney, fine. But speculation? Please.

13. I can't imagine this happening
it is not their style to admit weakness or appear to have made a bad choice. And I think that people who just watch the evening news don't really see much of cheney. And I don't think most people think the vice president's role is really all that significant. The problem is Bush. I think I am more concerned over something happening to stop the elections. That seems more their style.

14. Don't be so certain.
He might stick with Cheney, but it isn't that certain. I know people in Bush's Republican base who do not like Cheney and have let it be known. The Republicans are desperate to get Bush re-elected. Dropping Cheney would not be a problem for Bush's base. There are several possible substitutes. Hard to tell which one Bush might pick.

15. I would say that Cheney is a liability for Bush.
Visualize Kerry-Edwards. Now visualize Bush and Cheney next to them. Is there a person alive who feels that this is an even match? Someone posted that Cheney is only 12 years older than John Edwards, but he looks old enough to be his grandfather. He's just disgusting to look at. He just looks mean and sinister. And Bush -- we won't get into that.

Really, from an aesthetic point of view, The Old Cronies can't compete. Especially not now after 9/11.

So if Bush's advisors have any brains at all, they'll advise him to 'Dump Dick'.

16. If Cheney leaves, it will be because of the pending indictment
coming down on him in France. The indictment will probably hit before the election. No doubt if he's on the ticket it will be timed to come down before the election. They know this.

18. That's not what the Times article says at all
It's about the rumor and some Republicans' feelings that Cheney should go but it never actually says he IS going. Trust Drudge to get it wrong for the upteenth time.
