Lord Frederick Butler, author of the report on the use of British intelligence regarding Iraq, is a political veteran who has served in the inner circle of five prime ministers.
Widely regarded as an urbane, skilled and shrewd civil servant, Butler produced controversial headlines during an earlier government inquiry with his comments about telling the truth and the accuracy of the British news media.
"It does not follow that you mislead people," he said. "You just do not give the full information. It is not justified to mislead, but very often one is finding oneself in a position where you have to give an answer that is not the whole truth."<snip>
In 1972 he became private secretary to Prime Minister Edward Heath, a Conservative, and held the same post under Prime Minister Harold Wilson, a Labourite. He became principal private secretary to Thatcher, a Conservative, in 1982. In 1988, Butler was appointed cabinet secretary, serving Thatcher, Major and Prime Minister Tony Blair, of the Labour Party, until his retirement in 1998.
Why does this come has no surprise that Butler has such close ties to 10 Downing Street? I guess it's safe to assume that his report about the Intel for the Iraq war, doesn't give us the 'full information'. Thanks for the cover up Mr. Butler.
