Guantanamo Detainee Attempts Suicide (30th)
Associated Press

Another suicide attempt was reported Thursday by the Pentagon's prison for terrorist suspects in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The prisoner's attempt to kill himself this week brings the number of suicide attempts to 30 since the high-security prison was opened in January 2002, Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Barbara Burfeind said.

Most attempts occurred this year, which officials and critics alike have attributed to the effects of the indefinite detentions on prisoner morale. Some of the prisoners have been held for more than a year and a half without charges, access to lawyers or indications of whether or when they may be freed. -

1. Something is fishy about the "30" figure...
They've been giving it out for more than a year ! See this link

2. It must be like "non-combat deaths"
Maybe they don't count those prisoners who are in their fourth month of hunger strike as "suicide attempts." Or maybe if they succeed in killing themselves, they get removed from the "attempted" list.

Damn. All this was soooo predictable. (In fact, I predicted the hunger strikes here when they were still building the Gitmo cages.)

3. This is no accident
The sensory deprevation techniques used at concentration camp X are specifically intended to drive their victims insane.

That's why the outcry against them in Britain was so immediate and intense: they recognised them from a previous scandal when the British army was caught using them under CIA supervision against IRA prisoners.
