Two Mossad spies jailed in New Zealand

Australia is to step up its investigation of a suspected Israeli spy ring following the imprisonment of two Mossad agents in New Zealand yesterday for passport fraud.

One of the jailed spies, Eli Cara, 50, spent a significant amount of time in Australia and a house he used in Turramurra was raided shortly before his arrest in Auckland in March. Australian authorities had been told two other men had slipped the net in New Zealand, but the house was deserted.

"It was quite clear that people had left in a fair hurry," a spokesman for the Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, said last night. He said investigations into suspected Mossad spies on Australian soil were continuing.

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark, said she would reduce contact with Israel and slated it for its refusal to apologise or explain the actions of the two jailed men.

3. Did anyone else hear...
I remember reading something,..somewhere, about a year ago that said Israel now has carte blanc to basically carry out whatever operations it feels necessary IN THE U.S.

I remember reading this and being amazed and horrified. Is this an actuality?

Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli intelligence officials told United Press International.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has forbidden the practice until
now, these sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Israeli statements were confirmed by more than a half dozen U.S.
foreign policy and intelligence officials in interviews with UPI.

8. Economic espionage is a distinct possibility
And let's not pretend that the US, France, UK, Russia, etc don't have agents there as well.

10. They weren't here to spy on us, they were trying to use us as cover...
It has happened before (a Russian was caught doing it in the 90's) to us, and it has happened to the Canadians.

New Zealand is seen as a non-threatening nation by most other countries, and as such our people are less likely to be considered a security threat. So these agents (Russian and Israeli for sure, but probably other nations as well) come here to set up what is called a "legend".

They steal someones identity, then get passports birth certificates and all the accesseries (a business, home etc). Once they have established a history in New Zealand, they then head to their target nations, such as the US or the Middle East, disguised as New Zealanders. That is where they do their spying (or whatever it is they are trying to do).

I would be pretty sure the US does it too, but if they do, it is probably with NZ Govt assistance. Our intelligence agencies are very close with the US, in fact we are one arm of the Echelon system, and it was a NZ author Nicky Hagar that first exposed Echelon to the world, through his investigations of a listening station at Tangimoana.
