Edwards, a North Carolina senator who Democrats hope can help rally black and rural support in the conservative South, said he and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry (news - web sites) had been listening to Americans on the campaign trail and understood their concerns.
At two events in Louisiana, which Bush carried easily in 2000 and where polls show him leading again, Edwards said the president should spend more time hearing from regular people.
"He needs to be out here in the real world listening to what's going on in people's lives and knowing what the problems are," Edwards said at a New Orleans town hall meeting where he took questions from an invited audience.
