DU Exclusive: Rep. Corrine Brown says 2000 election was a Coup d' etat
Edited on Thu Jul-15-04 05:18 PM by Bleachers7
Once again DU has it first.

"Corrine Brown from FL got up and accused the Republicans leading the debate on the other side of participating in a "coup d'etat" in 2000."

House votes 219-189 to strike it from the record. She would also not be able to speak on the floor of the house for the rest of the day.

4. She's courageous. I've heard one of the right-wing fools really ripping
her. I think it was Rush. He was seething hatred, whichever one it was. It was so filthy I turned away and didn't listen further. He was vicious, cheap, nasty, underhanded, dirty: all the things we have learned to expect in right-wing radio "personalities."

He made a special effort, however, to get far more emotionally violent about Corrine Brown. Someone has a special filthy hatred for this woman.

I'm sure she knows about it. To hear she's sticking her neck out, and proceeding anyway, is to admire her determination. More power to her.

Florida has a TERRIBLE history. I'm in awe of the people who are still trying to get something done there to clean it up.

Rep., Zach Wamp, is a chicken. www.constitutioncenter.org/explore/ConstitutionNewswire/7332.

I hope that one call from someone not in her district will help her feel a little support!!!

She was also in Unprecedented wasn't she?

111. I believe she could speak later in the day
It appears to me that theoretically if anyone objected to her speaking later in the day, someone could have. However, I found this quote from the Presiding Officer in the Congressional Record that suggests that she could indeed speak later in the day and that nobody objected to that occuring. They could have if they wanted to but they didn't.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r108:3:./temp/~r108TdDJSH:e162255:

The SPEAKER pro tempore (Mr. Ose). Without objection, the words are stricken from the RECORD.

There was no objection.

The SPEAKER pro tempore. Without objection, the gentlewoman may proceed in order this day.

There was no objection.

The SPEAKER pro tempore. The Committee will resume its sitting.

Was the vote a straight party-line split?

Is this the start of civil disobediance in the House? Because I do believe people were quite put out over the Patriot Act vote.

NICE. Dems wanted UN supervision of the election. Reps wanted to make sure no money was spent for such a thing in the United States. That's when she erupted. I especially like where she reminded them how they said, "Get over it," insisting we have not.

It was very pleasant to watch.

14. She should say it every day and get others to join her
Silly example: In high school I had a typing teacher who wore a South African krugerrand necklace. Every day I typed "Free South Africa!" in all caps at the top of my assignments (this was in the 80's = apartheid). Eventually she stopped wearing the necklace to class. (I know, I was a little *&%!, wasn't I?

She should repeat it EVERY DAY until they are FORCED to deal with it.

If it weren't for what the Black Caucus did after the selection and their fighting for us in the House it would be over in my eyes. What they are doing gives me hope to keep on fighting! What you just posted from a hater of America only makes me want to fight more.

We are taking back the WH in 2004!

She'll go down as a heroine in this battle. She should keep it up!!!! Let her be silenced by the Republicans day after day-- the press will pick up on it as more Democrats fall in line behind her. They'll show the regime that we will not be silenced.

This would be the way to remind every single American that their government and future was stolen from them in late 2000.

Dear Representative Brown:

I have just learned of your remarks on the House floor concerning the
election. You spoke the TRUTH where it needs to be heard the most. So
typical of the republicans to essentially stick their fingers in their
ears by striking it from the record (kind of like what they do with the
truth in their heads when it hits their ears). But their hypocrisy is
coming back to haunt them.

You have supporters everywhere. Your courage is inspiring and contagious.
I am deeply moved. God bless you!!

112. Went back to read some of the published letters
I sent her a message through this link the other night and I went back today to read some of the other responses that she had received. As expected, most of those that did not agree with her stance were flaming in nature, but this one really disturbed me.

http://congress.org/congressorg/bio/userletter/?id=164&letter_id=101898716

The overall tone was disheartening, but this part really got my blood boiling.

snip --

You know the Constitution only guarantees you the right to vote,it DOESN'T guarantee that vote to be counted.

The writer further suggested that they were going to mount an email campaign to encourage her impeachment. Perhaps, we should also be writing to our reps to let them know that we support her position, lest the wackos have the only voice to be heard?

And then they punished her. They gagged her for the rest of the day. Gagged her! I am incensed. This black woman - ultra-minority in Congress - was treated like a Negro slave. She was bitch/slave-slapped by a majority that is as corrupt as, actually more corrupt than, anything in the history of this country.

On edit: DemoTex is pissed. I'll be raising hell tomorrow.

62. Those are the rules
The facts are that you can't directly accuse another member of a crime on the floor of the House. There is precedent for her. There is nothing wrong really with what she said but she violated the rules and then she can't speak for the day because that is the punishment under the rules.

107. Huh?
No rule is equally enforced, but the facts are that the rules exist. Also, if a Republican directly accused a Democrat of a crime, I do believe the words would be ordered stricken by the chair. There was precendent for the decision to punish Brown.

All I'm saying is that there isn't anything wrong with punishing her. It may be an act of civil disobedience and that is fine, but civil disobedience results in consequences. Charlie Rangel went protesting the Sudan policy and was arrested. That is how civil disobedience works. Brown wasn't expelled from the House or anything. She just couldn't speak for the rest of the day without the House's permission and that is how it works. To suggest that this some horrible thing that Brown was punished is just ridiculous.

110. She accused Steve Buyer of Indiana of a crime
She pretty much said that Buyer committed a crime because she said "you and others" took part in the coup d'etat and she said to Buyer "you" stole to election. This is because Buyer went to Florida during the recount to find out what overseas military voters had their absentee ballots thrown out and then apparently contacted them to try to challenge that their ballots were thrown out. I'm not entirely certain of the details of the situation but Peter Deutsch (D-FL) tried to launch an ethics investigation into Buyer's actions. So, it appears that when she said "you" she was looking right at Buyer and was addressing it to him and that isn't allowed.

How can they "strike" it from the Record - I mean, if she said something, shouldn't it be on the Record for all to see for historical purposes? They are trying to re-write and delete the history....

Ofcourse, in the case of FUCheney, I'd understand why they would "strike the Record"...

79. The words aren't erased from the record
Here is pretty much how I think it works:

If someone violates the rules of decorum on the floor, another member asks for the words to be taken down. Then, the clerk reports the words in question and the presiding officer rules if the words should be stricken and if they are the member can't speak for the rest of the day. This is the usual procedure and isn't new for Corrine Brown.

The words are stricken from the record of when they are said. However, the quote is placed in the record when the clerk re-reads the words in question.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r108:3:./temp/~r108Rxu6sA:e153128:

Ms. CORRINE BROWN of Florida. Mr. Chairman, I want to turn in a copy of the Certified Vote Organization. Over 1,700 people, that is technologists, lawyers, political scientists, says that the technology that we are using in the upcoming election is flawed.

I come from Florida *.*.* No, we are not going to get over it. And we want verification from the world.

Mr. BUYER. Mr. Chairman, I ask the gentlewoman's words be taken down. She said that ``you stole an election.''

The CHAIRMAN. All Members will suspend.

The gentleman from Indiana (Mr. Buyer) asked that the gentlewoman's words be taken down.

The Clerk will report the words.

In the meantime, all Members will cease from conversation. The gentlewoman will be seated.

The CHAIRMAN. The Clerk will report the words objected to.

The Clerk read as follows:

I come from Florida where you and others participated in what I call the United States coup d'etat. We need to make sure that it does not happen again. Over and over again, after the election, when you stole the election, you came back here and said get over it.

73. They appear to have changed the spelling of "Courage"
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 07:09 AM by GliderGuider
Here's what I just sent to Courageous Corrine:

Dear Ms. Brown,

I'm writing from Ottawa, Canada to congratulate you for your courageous remarks in Congress yesterday.

I have taken a deepening interest in American politics over the last four years, and what I have discovered in my research has disturbed me deeply. I fully agree that your nation suffered a coup d'etat in 2000. Few realized it at the time, and many are actively working today to keep that uncomfortable fact out of the public consciousness. It is only through the continuous efforts of brave souls such as yourself that the risk that this state of affairs might be repeated this year can be mitigated.

If I may be so bold, I feel there is a cancer gnawing at the very heart of your democracy. If it is allowed to metastacize it will consume your hard-won freedoms wholesale. No nation, especially a powerful one such as yours, is immune from the corruptions of global power. It requires the utmost dedication to principle to hold back the tides of self-interest that have no interest in the interests of others (if I may torture a phrase).

You will, no doubt, face increasingly vitriolic attacks and escalating resistance in the coming days. Please take what comfort you can from the fact that there are those even in other countries who notice and support your struggle. Keep it up. Don't let the forces of darkness steal the light your nation has husbanded for over two hundred years.

Sincerely,

Edited for spelling (sigh)
