Passengers Become Ill As Plane Lands In Baltimore
Cause Unclear; Flight Traffic Stopped Thursday Evening

POSTED: 11:14 pm EDT July 15, 2004
UPDATED: 12:39 am EDT July 16, 2004

LINTHICUM, Md. -- A passenger apparently vomited onboard a plane just before it landed at Baltimore-Washington International Airport late Thursday night.

A Southwest Airlines flight from Houston that was supposed to dock at BWI's Gate C11 was initially reported to have as many as 12 people onboard who were not conscious when the plane landed, WBAL-TV in Baltimore reported.

But airline officials told WBAL-TV that one person was passed out on the plane after vomiting. That set off an apparent chain reaction as five others also became ill. The first person refused treatment at the scene after the plane landed, but at least one person was reported to have been transported to a local hospital, WBAL-TV reported.

Airline officials believe the illness may be food-related.

Fire-rescue crews from Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties responded to the airport, where as many as 20 ambulances were observed.

3. What kind of food related illness causes unconciousness?
I have had food poisoning before and just vomitted profusely.

LINTHICUM, Md. -- At least two passengers became ill aboard a flight from Houston as it was approaching Baltimore-Washington International Airport Thursday night, an airline spokesman said.

Matt Haffner, regional director for Southwest Airlines, said a woman, who was ill before she boarded the plane, fainted before Flight 1283 landed at the airport about 10:30 p.m.

In an unrelated incident, Haffner said, a passenger with "medical issues" became ill when the plane landed. She was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

Authorities inspected the plane and air samples were taken as a precaution, Haffner said. No contaminants were found.

5. Southwest
It can't be a food issue on Southwest unless it's a peanut allergy.

6. The sight/sound of throwing up often makes onlookers nauseous
If someone came aboard who was already sick, then started to vomit, several others in the vicinity could easily follow suit, depending on their own sensitivity. (My ex-husband is kind of like that. Blood makes him faint, too.)

In a related issue, I'm sure the other passengers are really DISpleased that a sickly fellow passenger chose to share recirculated cabin air with them. They'll just have to wait out the incubation period of whatever it was.
