Sen. Clinton to address convention
http://www.thejournalnews.com/newsroom/071604/a11w16clinton.html

A day after supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton angrily accused Democratic leaders of snubbing one of the party's biggest stars, presidential hopeful John Kerry asked New York's junior senator yesterday to address the Democratic National Convention on opening night and introduce her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

"Senator Clinton is honored and delighted to have the opportunity to address the convention, and she will continue to do everything she can to elect John Kerry and John Edwards," said Philippe Reines, Clinton's press secretary, in a statement.

Kerry's invitation addresses a controversy that erupted after Kerry's campaign and the Democratic National Convention Committee announced a prime-time speakers lineup that did not include Hillary Clinton. The list did include Bill Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore.

Supporters of the former first lady, including former New York Democratic Chairwoman Judith Hope were outraged that Clinton was not being allowed to speak. They charged that the party was making a "huge mistake" and insulting New York women by not giving Clinton a speaking role.

3. Why do so many people on DU attack her?
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 07:14 AM by Ripley
1. She wasn't "outraged" her supporters were.
2. It was absurd to leave her out. If the election were held today and she was the nominee, she'd get more votes than Kerry.
3. Do you not recall how she was a key speaker during the primaries in Iowa?
4. She is only "divisive" to the repukes and people that hate assertive women.

I don't agree with everything Hillary has done, but I certainly see how incredibly popular she is. I'm sure there are other female Dems that will speak at the convention and are maybe better candidates...

But the fact remains, very few Americans could even tell you what Nancy Pelosi's position is, yet they all know Hillary. Name recognition counts folks. And this year, you better hope every damn Tom, Dick, Harry, Sue, Cindy and Mary VOTES.

4. Good decision and one that's in-your-face to the GOP
Having Senator Clinton introduce her husband says to everyone who views it or reads about it that if someone who suffered so much from his indiscrete actions in his personal life, can forgive him, and continue to love him, and most importantly honor him for all the positive things he did for this country - its people and its economy; and for the whole world through his intelligent approach to the international polity and economy - then all those listeners/readers/VOTERS can forget about his personal shortcomings and recognize that by God, its DEMOCRATS AND NOT REPUBLICANS who acted in the best interest of citizens of the United States and world at large.
