PORTLAND, Maine — A shortage of Canadian loggers brought on by a visa cap on foreign workers could wreak havoc on the state´s economy and wood and paper industries, according to a new report.
A study of the paper industry said a failure to get Canadian loggers into the United States soon could cut wood production by 4.4 million tons, or more than a quarter of the statewide harvest. The study was done by the Maine Forest Products Council, the Maine Pulp and Paper Council, and the Forest Resources Association.
The loss of production, coupled with already high prices for wood, could lead to temporary mill shutdowns and layoffs. It could potentially cost the state 2,921 jobs directly, with a payroll of $154 million, according to the report.
