Border hospitals face staff crunch over visas

WINDSOR, ONT. - Hospitals and clinics along the U.S. border are bracing for staff shortages next week because hundreds of Canadian medical workers haven't received the new security visas they'll need to cross the border and report for work.

With 10 days left before new U.S. security measures take effect on July 26 requiring Canadian and Mexican workers to have special accreditation visas, the medical centres are lobbying Washington to extend the deadline.

Almost all of the workers have submitted records from every place they ever worked and taken the exams the U.S. government now requires to prove that they are qualified to do their jobs. Still, about 10 per cent of them haven't received the final paperwork yet.
