U.S. Soldier Killed, Another Hurt in Iraq
MOSUL, Iraq - A roadside bomb hit a U.S. convoy Saturday, killing one U.S. soldier and wounding a second, the U.S. military said.

The attack occurred near Beiji, about 90 miles south of the northern city of Mosul. The soldier was assigned to Task Force Olympia, which is based in Fort Lewis, Wash.

As of Friday, July 16, 886 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites) in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 654 died in hostile action.

3. By my count
it is now 107 days until the election and the Iraqis have to mint another 106 Gold Star mothers to make it to 1,000 by then.

That is, unless these casualty figures are a gross underestimate of what has really happened.

I think so. For one thing, as I understand it, there is no duty to report the deaths, combat or otherwise, of servicepersons in our military who aren't citizens of the U.S.

4. There have been 36 this month--averaging 2 each day
No question that the figure will hit 1,000 by election day unless something changes dramatically. Grim numbers.
