Mandela birthday tributes start pouring in
Edited on Sun Jul-18-04 12:31 AM by dArKeR
Birthday tributes have started pouring in for former president Nelson Mandela who turns 86 on Sunday.

The African National Congress said on Friday that South Africa is fortunate to have a visionary like Mandela as one of its leaders.

"We celebrate with you, Tata, because your achievements are our achievements, and we are grateful we can still enjoy the benefit of your leadership, which has taken us to great heights," ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said in a statement.

The World's most respected Statesman said:

"What I am condemning is that one power, with a president (Bush) who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust."

"Why is the United States behaving so arrogantly? All that (Mr. Bush) wants is Iraqi oil."

2. Nelson, in a statement to the press,
said that many innocents have potentially gone to jail, like Martha Steward. I'm sorry. I'm going to be punished for this post and deservedly so.

3. Perhaps
Mandela can arrange political asylum for Martha since she is being oppressed in her native country.

4. Suggestion for Mandela
Edited on Sun Jul-18-04 10:31 AM by Citizen Daryl
He should visit Martha Stewart in prison. You know, since they've got so much in common, and all. He could give her some emotional support to help her through that dark night of the soul.

And maybe pick up some stuff from Bed Bath & Beyond on his way there.

5. America will never be able to produce a statesman and human being
of the stature of Nelson Mandela. We had one and we killed him.

7. Mandela Celebrates 86th Birthday Quietly
By ELLIOTT SYLVESTER, Associated Press Writer

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Former President Nelson Mandela celebrated his 86th birthday quietly Sunday at his family home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape with his wife Graca Machel and family members.

The low key celebration was in keeping with the Nobel Laureate's announcement in June this year that he would cut back on public appearances, a spokesman from the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.

Mandela said he did not want to withdraw completely from public life but would be more selective about events he attended. He has maintained a hectic schedule since retirement from active politics in 1999.
