Democratic running mate gets warm welcome in GOP territory.

NEWPORT BEACH – When John Edwards brought his talk of optimism and unity to the heart of Republican country Saturday, it wasn't just Democratic stalwarts shelling out $1,000 each and praising John Kerry's running mate for bringing needed charisma to the ticket.
The Balboa Bay Club luncheon of 400 or so included new Democrats who'd never been to a political event before. Corona del Mar's Nancy Paulos, 44, jumped to the Democratic Party eight years ago and said this was the first time she felt strongly enough about an election to attend a fund-raiser. Nancy Geerlings, who left the Republican Party three years ago out of frustration with President George W. Bush, is now helping lead the Kerry-Edwards volunteer campaign in Newport Beach. "I felt that (Bush) led us into a forced war and other countries have lost respect for us," Geerlings said. "I feel Kerry is a statesman, not a politician. And Edwards, he's a good balance, with his sunny disposition."

"We believe tomorrow can be better than today," he said. "The American people are going to reject the old, tired, hateful politics of the past. John Kerry ... represents hope for all Americans, not just the few at the top." He touched on the need to improve foreign relations, reduce health-care costs and address the needs of those living in poverty. "We're going to say 'No' to there being any American working full time for minimum wage and still living in poverty." But he also joked that those problems were not too close at hand at the Balboa Bay Club.
"Some of you saw during the presidential primaries or heard me talk about one America where people struggle to get by, have trouble paying their bills, can't save any money," he said. "This is the other America we're in right here, in this beautiful place.".. "He used a lot of very vague terms, but he brings a certain optimism that touches you," said Cathy Cook, a 45-year-old job recruiter from Huntington Beach. "Kerry appeals more to your intelligence. Edwards appeals to your heart and soul."
