Editor murdered in Russia
Editor murdered in Russia

Nick Paton Walsh in Moscow
Monday July 19, 2004
The Guardian

Another prominent foreign journalist has been killed in Moscow eight days after the American investigative reporter Paul Klebnikov was murdered outside his office.

Pail Peloyan, the editor of the magazine Armenian Lane, was found on the hard shoulder of Moscow's large ring road with severe head injuries and knife wounds to the chest on Saturday morning.

Klebnikov's killing highlights the intense risks that journalists face on a daily basis in Russia. Fifteen have been killed since 2000, although Klebnikov was the first westerner.

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the murder and the Kremlin for the "climate of lawlessness and impunity" that permitted the killing to be ordered and carried out. It views Russia as one of the 10 most dangerous places for journalists to work.

1. where is bush's outrage? I WANNA SEE OUTRAGE, MR bUSH!
he has to save his strength, of course, because rove has canceled his vacation and now he's struggling to find a time and clandestine place to meet with his handlers while on the road lying to his brainwashed supporters.

4. Bush... outrage?
Hell, he'd kill a few too if he could get away with it. Matter of fact, if looks could kill, half the WH press corps would be dead already! Hah!

2. Most of this involves...
... investigation of illegal business operations or activities of the Russian mafia, and from some film I saw recently, the court system in Russia has not been at all helpful. Judges with no juridical experience, prosecutors without legal training, and a determined attitude not to challenge the determinations of the police, which do not seem to be very accurate in terms of evidence. Lot of what goes on in some cities in this country--find someone, try `em and be done with `em.

There have been a lot of killings, and most seem to point to organized crime. A lot of Russians grumbling that this didn't happen under the communists....

6. Scary shit.
I worked as a journalist in St. Petersburg, Russia, about 10 years ago and it was pretty hairy at times. We did a lot of watching each others' backs and my apartment was broken into twice.

3. Russians are even worse than Americans...
Their main parties are Putin's party, an ultra-nationalist "leftist" party with ties to the Orthodox Church, a communist party sprouting Brezhnev-era rhetoric, and a neo-Nazi party.

Why don't they wake the Hell up and start voting for Jabloko or the social democratic party.

7. Because
...if you could vote for the Beer-Drinkers Party, wouldn't you? Over a party whose name means "apple"? ;)

8. Incidentally...
Jabloko is ideologically similar to the Liberal Party of Canada (a Godsend by Russian standards) while their social-democratic party is probably just a generic European SD/Labour party. :-P

9. More, more, more, about Russia, please...
Seems we are getting pretty tight with the old USSR. What up?
Are we gonna carve up the oil spoils with 'em?

10. Look into Congressman Curt Weldon's (R-PA) relationship
with Putin's party. That's all I'll say here.
