The production of Monday's edition of the Chicago Tribune was delayed significantly because of an extended computer system failure Sunday night.

Many subscribers therefore will not receive their Monday newspaper until as late as Tuesday morning. And the content of Monday's edition was reduced.

The Tribune deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to our customers. Timely, reliable service is a top priority. On-schedule delivery will resume Tuesdasy, and all Monday subscribers will receive full credit for the curtailed edition.

I appreciate a nice tinfoil chapeau as much as anyone else around here, but this is just ridiculous.

As a former newspaper person, I can tell you that this is the WORST nightmare for a paper. Rule number one is: The paper goes to press on time, no matter WHAT. No exceptions. Lateness trashes the entire finely calibrated press/delivery schedule, not to mention pissing off everyone in the revenue chain (newsstands, advertisers, subscribers) and destroying any last shred of remaining credibility.

The Trib is not interested in staging a "test" newspaper shutdown at the cost of millions of dollars of lost revenue and make-goods, spending weeks working through the scheduling nightmare of playing "catchup" througout the entire production chain--oh, and becoming the laughingstock of the newspaper world. (Hey, takes the heat of the NY Post--that's it! It's a MURDOCH plot!!!

So they'd bring me my Monday paper on TUESDAY, and expect me to pay for it? Screw that. I want a NEWSpaper, if I want to read HISTORY, I'll go to the library.

People in Chicago should march on the Trib with torches and pitchforks, to give them an idea how well blaming a "computer glitch" for putting Shrub back in office will go over.
