BBV: ES&S to rent three CA counties optical scanners for recall election
http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=827372

Not at all oddly, this announcement comes from the Omaha World-Herald, a part owner of ES&S.

"Louis Dedier, vice president and general manager of California operations, said the company normally only sells voting machines. But because the California ballot will contain the names of 135 candidates for governor, as well as two issues, some counties found that their current election systems were inadequate, he said.

"ES&S will provide 16 machines to Contra Costa County, eight to Stanislaus County and two to Colusa County."

1. Louis Dedier
was involved in some scandal in California. He was a State Election Official who quit to go to work for ES&S and then was investigated for a conflict of interest charge. Looking for the info and will post if I can find it.

4. here is a taste:
In another revolving-door scandal, the state of California has begun an investigation into Louis Dedier, the state’s director of voting systems. Dedier accepted a job with ES&S, then made recommendations without disclosing the potential conflict of interest.

I believe these are the same kind of machine I used last year... you mark the paper ballot with a pen, right? I wonder what kind of machines these are to replace?

6. Many counties in CA...
... were using punchcard machines in previous elections. Don't know how many have been replaced by electronic voting machines. The ones to be rented are optical scanners rather than touch screen, but there are still issues with vote counting on the OS machines.

Cheers.

"The Omaha World-Herald Co. has a minority interest in ES&S."

Do we know how much of the media is invested in voting machine companies??

5. Do a search for the Ahmanson family...
... and you'll get an eyeful. They are part (principal) owners of the newspaper, and originally had a controlling interest in ES&S. I believe the website worldnetdaily.com is also associated with the paper and the family.
