America Hosts 76 percent of Islamic Terrorist Websites
America Hosts 76 percent of Islamic Terrorist Websites
by Sean Beesley

While America and the world combat terror, it appears that the terrorists and their supporters themselves are tapping into America’s booming web hosting industry to spread their venom.

With the war on terror in full swing and terrorists scrambling to reorganize and regroup, the anonymous nature of the Internet has become an essential tool. As we often hear in news reports terrorists and their supporters have become more reliant on websites, message boards and chat rooms to communicate, rally supporters, and grotesquely display their barbaric acts of beheading to the world. We in the western world generally assume that these sites are set up and run in some remote Middle Eastern country spewing their hate to the world from afar. However, the first instalment of new report by MEMRI (Middle Middle East Media Research Institute) has a shocking revelation.

The Middle East Media Research Institute has released part one of it's report on terror affiliated Websites. In a special report entitled Islamist Websites and Their Hosts Part I: Islamist Terror Organizations, which they state is to be the first of many reports on the topic. MEMRI has listed 25 terror affiliated or official Websites active as of July 16 2004. Based on the information shown 20 of the sites are hosted in North America, 19 in the United States and 1 in Canada. The remaining sites were from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Russia, United Arab Emirates, and Iran. Meaning 76 percent of the official or affiliated terror sites mentioned are hosted in the United States, while two sites or 8 percent are from the middle east. The American hosted sites include the website of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Army of Ansar Al-Sunnah ; known supporters of Al-Qa'ida, several pro Al-Qa'ida sites including one that publishes Al-Qa'ida's Al-Battar Training Camp magazine, the official website of Hamas, a pro- Hizbullah weekly magazine, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Arafat’s Fatah organization, Hizbullah TV station Al-Manar, website of Palestinian Islamic Jihad Secretary General Dr. Abdallah Ramadhan Shalah., and Al-Quds Brigades, military wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad. While the site for Izz Al-din Al-Qassam, military wing of Hamas, is hosted in Kelowna, Canada.

1. Reports by the Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 11:02 PM by meluseth
should be taken with a big grain of salt.

According to Right Web:

MEMRI, which describes itself as “objective and independent,” has gained a reputation for cherry-picking the most virulent, anti-Israel and anti-U.S. reports and commentary from the Arab media.

(snip)

A former CIA counterintelligence official, Vincent Cannistraro, said that “they (MEMRI) are selective and act as propagandists for their political point of view, which is the extreme-right of Likud…. They simply don't present the whole picture.” In an article titled “Selective MEMRI,” Brian Whitaker of the Guardian (London) observed: “Evidence from MEMRI's website also casts doubt on its non-partisan status.”

(snip)

Although critics are more concerned with the selectivity of MEMRI’s translations rather than their accuracy, instances of MEMRI’s political bias affecting the accuracy of its translations have on occasion been cited. The Guardian’s Brian Whitaker took MEMRI’s president to task for mistranslating a question that included an implied criticism of Israel. The question was "How do you deal with the Jews who are besieging al-Aqsa and are scattered around it?" But MEMRI translated this as: "How do you feel about the Jews?"

5. Um, it seems CFP has an agenda too...
Check this out from it's 'About' page and these political cartoons:

About Canada Free Press

While all things Toronto, and particularly the shenanigans of wasteful municipal politicians are grist for the mill for Toronto Free Press, Canada Free Press caters to an international following. Judi McLeod and Arthur Weinreb report on the media, Canada’s oh-so-politically-correct Liberal Government, the latest on radical environmental and animal rights activists, here and abroad, and keep an eye on the sometimes bizarre affairs of the United Nations. With a wide range in topics, Canada Free Press columnists cover arts and entertainment, the literary world, business, health and lifestyles and sports.

All Canada Free Press cover stories are exclusive and you won’t be reading them anywhere else.

In fact-finding, both publications are committed to the pursuit of the truth. Just like Toronto Free Press, Canada Free Press brings readers the best available in hard-hitting investigative journalism.

And here she is, the Rupert Murdoch of Canadian "journalism":

Canada Free Press.com and Toronto Free Press founding editor Judi McLeod is an award-winning journalist with 25 years experience in the print media. A former Toronto Sun columnist, she also worked for the Kingston Whig Standard and the former Brampton Daily Times.

I'd actually only encountered the "Toronto Free Press" site a few days ago (Canadian talking here). Realized immediately what it was.

Since I don't read any Suns, I'd also never heard of Judi McLeod. (And hey, Conrad Black, Lord Tubby of Whatsit, of the London Telegraph and Jerusalem Post and late of half the newspapers in Canada, including his flagship National Post, and of that Hollinger spot of bother he's having now, was our own Rupert Murdoch!)

Kinda like WorldNewsDaily -- the stuff you read there might actually be "true", if you don't count the stuff it isn't telling you as part of a more complete concept of "truth". As is plainly the case with this article.

8. it's also probable...
...that many of these sites perporting to be run by Arabs/Muslims or whatnot, are in fact sites run by people who have an interest in portraying Arabs/Muslims in a less than flattering light. My understanding is that some of those so-called Arab sites that have issued terrorist warnings originate in Texas, of all places. Does that sound like our government? Yeah, uh huh- very much so.
