A key member of the Italian Cabinet, Umberto Bossi, is leaving his post, in another blow to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government.
Mr Bossi, head of the populist Northern League party, has resigned to take up a seat in the European Parliament.
<snip>
The politician, known for his volatile outbursts, was regarded as a vital ally of the prime minister - his
decision to withdraw support for an earlier Berlusconi government led to its collapse in 1994. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3906389.stmLove that last line!
Anything that will speed the end of Silvio's government is good news to me! The BBC quotes their man in Rome as saying "Mr Berlusconi is looking increasingly beleaguered as he tries to hold his centre-right coalition together." Umberto Bossi's Northern League ministers released a statement saying they "will keep their word even in the face of obvious betrayal by their allies." Mr Bossi, according to BBC's Rome correspondent, has been a loyal supporter of Mr Berlusconi for the past three years that he's been in the Italian Cabinet. Bossi has been recuperating from a heart attack in March and his office manager mentioned personal reasons, health, and perhaps pressure from his wife as being behind his resignation. Ah, yes, health and family!
