Bush Took Quote Out of Context, Researcher Says
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/whitehouse/la-na-cuba20jul20,1,2791880.story?coll=la-news-politics-white_house

LA Times, 7/20

WASHINGTON — Like many scholars, Charles Trumbull hoped that one day his work would attract attention in high places. So you might think he'd be thrilled that someone in the White House used one of his research papers to draft a speech for President Bush last week. But he's not.

In a hotel conference room in Tampa, Fla., on Friday, Bush told law enforcement officials that Fidel Castro was brazenly promoting sex tourism to Cuba.

"The dictator welcomes sex tourism. Here's how he bragged about the industry," Bush said. "This is his quote: 'Cuba has the cleanest and most educated prostitutes in the world.' "

Asked about the source for the quote, White House officials provided a link to a 2001 paper, written by Trumbull, on the website of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy.

1. more proof bush can't read.....
~snip~
Asked about the source for the quote, White House officials provided a link to a 2001 paper, written by Trumbull, on the website of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy.

Trumbull says the quote was probably a paraphrase of comments the Cuban leader made in 1992, which have been oft-repeated and seem to have taken on a life of their own.

"It shows that they didn't read much of the article," Trumbull said in a telephone interview.

~snip~

"Castro was merely trying to emphasize some of the successes of the revolution by saying 'even our prostitutes our educated,' " Trumbull said. "Castro was trying to defend his revolution against negative publicity. He was in no way bragging about the opportunities for sex tourism on the island."

3. How can a president quote an article written by an undergraduate
who didn't even footnote it? This is amazing. But let's remember that much of what Blair used to go kill Iraqis came from a thesis that was several years old...

7. Your exact point shows what they think about American voters
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 07:32 AM by Gman
"written by an undergrad who didn't even footnote it" says tremendous volumes about the depths these people will stoop to in their never ending propaganda war. The arrogance is completely unmitigated.

That is so intellectually dishonest. But then, to the average white male headed to the stock car races this weekend it doesn't make one iota of difference because they just don't get it. And Bush/Rove count very heavily on people that just don't get it.

9. Well, he used an old undergrad thesis as part of his basis for the
run-up to war. As another poster noted: "At least they're recycling."

6. The best part...
Quote:
The speech "was vetted the same way all the president's speeches are vetted," Buchan
said, declining to provide details.

In other words, we just made stuff up, like we usually do.

8. I can't stop laughing
I can't believe that he used a undergrad paper. What a fucking moron. The best part is that the paper went totally over his head. We should all be concerned when a undergrad paper is totally beyond comprehension of the presidents administration.

10. Millions will see Bushes stupid sex quote but only an extremely
small number will see this information. The idea is out there and the RW echo chamber will repeat it over and over.
