Iraq Requests Return of UN Weapons Inspectors
CAIRO (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites) has asked the United Nation's nuclear watchdog agency to send weapons inspectors back to the country they left before last year's U.S.-led invasion, the agency's head, Mohamed ElBaradei, said on Tuesday.

ElBaradei said the inspectors would return "in the coming days" to finish the mission they started before the war to establish whether ousted President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) possessed banned weapons.

Two U.N. agencies were searching for banned weapons in Iraq before last year's invasion. ElBaradei's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) handled nuclear inspections, while the UNMOVIC agency was charged with looking for chemical, biological and ballistic arsenals.

"We received an official request from (Iraqi Foreign Minister) Hoshiyar Zebari for the return of international inspectors in the coming days," ElBaradei told reporters after arriving at Cairo airport.

1. And BushCo has had how many people "searching" for how long now?
Bush's searchers were supposed to be better and faster than those old UN inspector guys!

Bush's guys, of course, FOUND NOTHING.

This must mean that our puppets-in-power have bought some WMDs and have "hidden" them in plain sight.

Like an Easter Egg Hunt for todlers...

7. Cynical myself, but I don't think that would work
It would be very difficult to pull the wool over the UN inspectors' eyes. They know, with great precision, the composition of Iraq's various chemical and nuclear materials. It would be virtually impossible to mimic Iraqi production processes within an undetectable tolerance.

Also, I think the CIA would leak any "throw-down WMD" attempt, causing more irreparable damage to the Bush mob.

8. hmmm, the UN inventoried all that before the invasion...
I guess if there was any missing cobalt or whatever, the inspectors won't be able to tell when they re-inspect Tuwaitha.

9. I think this may be some sort of legal formality
Since the tenuous legality of the invasion was based on a concern about WMD, the UN has to give Iraq a clean bill of health on the matter before the handover from the U.S. to the Allawi government would be considered legal, again in some tenuous and technical sense. It is all nonsense and rank hypocrisy of course.

11. Dear Iraq, we'd love to return your UN weapons inspectors, but ...
we lost them. We know that they existed just a couple of years ago, but we just can't find them now. We think they may be hidden in Syria or Iraq; or maybe just buried in the sand someplace in your country. But US occupation forces, who are slated to be in Iraq for decades to come, will help by looking for the inspectors.

Ta ta,
Kofi
