(Columbia-AP) July 20, 2004 - Officials say South Carolina's unemployment rate increased to 6.6 percent in June, up 0.3 percent from May.

South Carolina's unemployment rate is higher than the national average, which remained at 5.6 percent last month for the third straight month.

The state's Employment Security Commission says the number of claims for unemployment insurance increased in June because of widespread layoffs across the state. The commission also blames the end of the school year for layoffs in state and local government.

Only 5600 jobs were added last month, mostly in tourism and business, but government jobs declined by 5300.

Marlboro County had the highest unemployment rate in the state in June at 20.4 percent, up from 19.1 in May. Marion at 17.4 (up from 16.8) and Williamsburg at 16.5 (up from14.8) had the second- and third-highest rates.

5. Strange, but
Have you noticed that the most hotly contested states are the ones with the highest unemployment. Florida may be the only one with lower than average unemployment.

I read some disturbing comments by Robert Reich yesterday, in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He said that 20% of the job loss in the last 3 1/2 years were in Ohio! And this is still a battleground state?

I got an anti-Kerry e-mail from my brother-in-law, a Cleveland cop the other day, and I replied that because of Bushes budget cuts, this year over 700 police and fireman were laid off in Cleveland. Community policing eliminated. Everything.

Sheesh!
